“More than a compliment.” Her eyes shone with sincerity and, taking her hand, I dropped the coy act.

I placed my arm around Savanah’s waist, and she whispered, “I love you, Carson.”

I turned to look at her. Her eyes had a sheen of moisture. “You’re not going to cry, are you? You’re supposed to look cheery for the camera.”

She smiled sadly. “I’m always saying it, though.” She stared deeply into my eyes, searching for an answer. “Is it because you’re not sure about us?”

Just as I was about to speak, Caroline joined us, and I greeted her with a nod.

I kissed Savanah on the cheek. “I’ll be back in a minute. Your mother wants a word.”

“Don’t let her spook you.”

“I don’t spook easily.” I leaned over and kissed her. “I love you too.”

As the sun warmed over us, we locked eyes. I knew with all my heart that I wanted to spend my life with this woman.

Whether she wanted that, I couldn’t say. Savanah changed her mind as often as her clothes, which was about four times a day. Her desire for me had grown, however, and it wasn’t just this constant need to fuck either. We’d also become affectionately attached.

I followed Savanah’s mother into the library with endless rows of antique books. One could almost feel their brain cells expanding just being amongst those dark-wooded shelves, which I imagined being filled with an eternity of knowledge.

Caroline sat at the desk, and from party host, she’d effortlessly morphed into CEO.

“Do you think we can send someone into Ma Chérie?”

Here I was thinking she was about to discuss my relationship with her daughter. Her launching straight into my security work jolted me back to the real world.

“You want me to recruit a young girl to do undercover?”

She nodded. “Can you find one? And by all means, not a word to Manon or Savanah.”

“I rarely speak to Manon unless she’s hanging out at Reboot.”

“Manon visits the gym?” She wore a puzzled frown.

“Not to work out. She comes to see Drake.”

“Are they together?” Her dark eyebrows gathered.

Shifting about, I felt uncomfortable suddenly. Drake had spoken in private about his attraction to Manon, but it wasn’t my style to divulge our private conversations.

“I’m sure they’re not.”

“He’s got another girlfriend?”

I took a deep breath. “He’s young. He goes out.” I didn’t wish to spell out the fact that Drake had women coming from all corners. Mainly older ones.

“She likes him,” she said, almost to herself.

“Maybe.”

“I wouldn’t mind, to be honest.” She sighed. “My granddaughter worries me.”

“It looks like she’s on Crisp’s payroll.” I rubbed my neck.

How did we get onto this subject?

“As long as that’s all she is.”
