I looked from mother to daughter.

What just happened?

The past few months flashed before me. We’d been inseparable, and apart from Savanah occasionally giving me the shits with her “I want it now” act, which had become less frequent, we lived well together. She talked, and I liked to listen. I also loved cuddling in bed at night. I’d never slept so well.

The thought of spending a lifetime with this stunning woman sent a wave of pleasure through me, even though I hadn’t planned on tying the knot with anyone.

“I’d love to marry you if you’d have me.”

I took her hand, and Savanah leapt on me for a hug.

Yes, she was a child. But I loved that about her.

I looked at her mother, wondering whether this was what she wanted.

“Do you approve?” I had to ask.

Caroline nodded very slowly, as though that idea was growing on her.

“Let’s announce our engagement here.” Savanah danced on the spot.

Chapter 27

Savanah

JacintawalkedthroughHarrodswith me. “I can’t believe you’re engaged. I didn’t even get the invite.”

I chuckled at her downward smile. “No one did. It just happened. One minute, I’m at my brother’s christening, and the next, all the guests are toasting our engagement.”

“Have you set a date?” She paused at a rack of skirts.

“Not yet. I’ve been too scared to bring it up with Carson.”

“Why?” She frowned, holding a skirt against her body.

I sighed. “I’m reluctant to burst this dreamy bubble. My mother might’ve pressured him. I overheard her asking him what he planned to do with this relationship.”

Jacinta stroked a leopard-print scarf and chuckled. “That does sound like a little pressure.”

“Exactly. That’s why I’m seeing this as a kind of cooling-off period. Only he’s been just as affectionate and sweet.” I smiled like a woman overdosing on bliss. “We’re staying at Mayfair for now, while Carson sets up his security firm.”

“He doesn’t need to do anything though, does he? I mean, you’re filthy rich, Savs.” She picked up a red Louis Vuitton handbag. “This is soooo nice.”

“Here, let me buy it for you as my getting-engaged-and-exploding-with-joy present.”

“Oh, no, it’s like three thousand pounds.”

I headed to the register and paid for the bag and passed it over to Jacinta.

She hugged me. “I should be the one buying gifts.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll be sure to drop hints about things I love.” That suggestion was ridiculous. I needed nothing. Just Carson.

“I could kill a G and T,” I said.

Just as we hit the street, I saw Carson talking to a young blond woman.

I froze.
