“Why didn’t you tell me?” My heart snapped at hearing about my young brother among men who deserved to have their balls chopped off.

“You’d joined the army.”

He was right. I started young, volunteering at sixteen.

“Is he still alive?” The last time I saw my father, I was fourteen.

“Nup. Took a bullet in the heart. I held him.” A tear streaked his sunken cheek, and equally crushed, I suddenly found it hard to breathe.

Angus’s chilly hand touched mine. I guess that was his way of consoling me.

“He was ashamed of you knowing about his drug dealing. He was proud of you for joining the army.” His mouth tugged at one end. “He’d started young. Just like me.”

Clearing my throat, I asked, “Was he on drugs?”

He shook his head. “Nuh. Just booze. He liked the horses. And he pimped a few girls.” He pointed to the side of his bed. “Do me a favour. Press that button for me.”

“Painkiller?”

He nodded.

“Shouldn’t a nurse administer it?”

“Yeah, but they’re stingy.”

He closed his eyes as I pressed the button.

“There’s something else.” His voice had gone slurry. “You’re going to marry a rich girl, I hear.”

“How do you know that?”

“I saw something on FB, I think.” He touched my hand. “I’m happy for you. You were always the one that got ahead.”

I studied him for signs of resentment, but his mouth formed an uneven smile.

“I’ve always looked up to you, Carson.”

I couldn’t say anything. I wanted to ask about the dealing web so that I could find that scumbag hassling Savanah, but scrambled emotions had robbed me of words.

“There’s something else,” he said. “There’s a drug cartel operating near where your rich family lives.”

I sat up. “Bridesmere?”

“They’re smuggling through the port there to a private casino at the back of some posh resort.”

My brow contracted. “How do you know?”

“I just do. I want you to know because I don’t want your kids, my nephews or nieces, being around scum.”

Tears pooled in my eyes. I wiped them before he could see.

He closed his eyes. “I need to sleep, Bro.”

I squeezed his hand. And then kissed him on the cheek. “I’ve always loved you, Angus.”

He squeezed my hand back and then it went limp.

I felt his neck. He was gone.
