“Look at you two. You’re still so loved up.”

Theadora chuckled. “Don’t sound so surprised.”

“Just most married couples don’t go around holding hands,” I said.

Declan gazed lovingly at Theadora and stroked her cheek before turning to me. “We’re not most married couples.”

His arched brow and Theadora’s little blush revealed passion.

Will Carson and I be all loved up in five years?

I looked over and saw my handsome husband-to-be kicking the ball with the children.

“Carson’s a good man. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone more selfless,” Declan said. “He was always there for his mates on the field. Risking his life. I’m proud to have him as a brother-in-law.”

“Now you’re making me cry.” My lips trembled.

Theadora hugged me again. “He loves you madly. You’ve found your piece of paradise, Savvie.”

A tear slid down my cheek. “Thanks, Thea. I’m just going inside for a minute.”

As tears threatened to erupt, I hurried inside to hide.

Despite tears of joy, I also mourned not being able to have kids. And there was a touch of fear too. What if everything came crumbling down? I couldn’t deal with another drama. I’d had too many in that brief spate of time, and anxiety seemed to have attached itself to me.

For someone who’d skipped through life, I could never have imagined carrying such a heavy load, especially on my wedding day.

If only Bram had never happened. I would still be that fluffy girl flicking through fashion magazines, what shoes to wear my only concern. But then, having fallen madly in love with a man whose soul was as beautiful as he was had helped me realise that only love mattered. Not the latest Balenciaga must-have or some viral juicy gossip.

I wiped my eyes, and on entering the front room, found Manon giving Janet a hard time about something.

Turning to me, Manon pulled a smarmy grin. “I thought you’d be at the Pond having a facial or something to remove those dark rings under your eyes.”

I stuck my middle finger up at her.

Despite not being able to control Manon’s appearance as a guest at my wedding, at least my mother promised that Crisp wouldn’t be attending the ceremony. Unfortunately, his nonattendance didn’t extend to the weekend party, however, given that everyone in the area had gotten an invitation.

Pushing aside niggling issues, I took a breath and invited the euphoria from a future with Carson to absorb every cell in my body.

I stepped into my bedroom, and my eyes landed on the pale-pink Givenchy gown hanging ready for my special day.

After leaving the hospital, I took a trip to Paris with Sienna, where we embarked on a three-day shopping spree. That was the longest I’d been without Carson, and even a drink along the elegant boulevards of Paris couldn’t stop me from missing him.

My mother entered my room. “Are you okay?”

“I’m just nervous, I guess.”

“You’re having second thoughts.” She looked surprised.

I shook my head decisively. “I love Carson.” I faced her. “You like him, don’t you?”

She embraced me. Something she didn’t do that often, but since Cary had arrived in her life, my mother had become more demonstrably affectionate.

“He’s a good man who brings strength and protection. One can’t underestimate how important those qualities are in a man. A man who can fix things.” She smiled.

“Cary doesn’t strike me as the handyperson type,” I countered.

She chuckled. “That’s not what I meant by fixing things.”
