He shook his head. “Not properly. She strikes me as a bit of a flirt, and she’s all over Drake.”

“That’s not so surprising. He’s hot.” I smiled tightly. “As someone who prefers men my age or a little older, I’m personally not into him. Drake’s also too nice for her, and he’s not rich enough. Manon has made no secret of her ambition to live the high life.”

“And that makes what we just heard right?”

Why the fuck didn’t I move away sooner?

We could have been rolling on my bed naked by now. Instead, Carson had gone dark on me, as though I’d been the one luring rich old sleazebags.

“Hey, don’t judge me. I’m not the one that brought them together. It’s her choice.”

“But she’s so young. And an entire week with a man like that. You don’t know what he might do to her.”

“She might like it.” I shrugged.

“You speak like you’ve had experience with this sort of thing.”

I studied him, searching for his earlier playfulness, but was met with a steely, earnest gaze.

“I have never needed to sell my virginity. I’ve just made some bad choices. As I’m sure you must have. So don’t you dare judge me.”

He scratched his strong jawline. “I need a beer.” And off he went. Just like that.

I released a frustrated breath.

What just happened?

Should I chase him and apologise?

What for?

I just spoke the truth. So why did it feel like I was being punished?

Talk about crashing big time. In a matter of minutes, I’d gone from the heights of steamy arousal to the lows of being unfairly judged. A heavy sigh deflated my chest as I headed back into the party.

My mother appeared lost in a deep and meaningful with her new Prince Charming. With his eyes glued to her face, he seemed to hang off her every word.

I approached them and greeted her new friend with a smile.

“This is my daughter, Savanah.” My mother gestured. “And this is Carrington.”

“Cary, please.” He leaned in and kissed my cheek. “Nice to meet you.”

I looked from him to my mother. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but can I steal my mother for a minute?”

“I’ll get a refill, I think.” He pointed at the empty glass in her hand. “Can I take that from you?”

She nodded, with a dreamy look in her eyes. I imagined that was me staring at Carson’s handsome face before Manon’s cancerous scene.

He casually strode off with my mother watching him.

“My god.” I waved the air as though shooing flies. Only this was more like fairy dust. “Feel those sparks in the air.”

She smiled at me as though I was talking nonsense. “He’s an interesting man.”

“Oh, Mummy, please. He’s gorgeous, and he’s into you.”

Her cheeks reddened. “Anyway, what did you want to tell me?”
