“I’m not the queasy kind. Not much shocks me. My instincts are to

help, not judge. In saying that, I don’t do complications either.”

Chapter 13

Savanah

Whatacrappynight.I’d hardly slept, and then Bram called to demand we meet for lunch.

I never wanted to see him again.

I’d cried all night. I couldn’t believe Carson walking away like that. But yet I also sympathised with him. I wouldn’t want to share either.

On a deeper level, my heart warmed knowing that he cared. Cold comfort maybe, because if he didn’t, he would have held me all night.

In reality, this deepening attachment to Carson had become so overpowering I’d become a shadow. My heart barely pumped, and I almost couldn’t breathe without him.

While Bram demanded that we hang out in London, I needed to come up with some excuse to remain at Merivale, close to Carson.

Squirming at the thought of talking to Bram, I took a deep breath and made that call. “Um… I’m not well. Got a migraine.”

“Take some drugs. I can shoot you up.” He didn’t even sound like he was joking.

“No. I don’t want that. You’re just stressing me out.”

“You’ll be more stressed out when I upload that footage to social media.”

“How much?”

“You know my price, Savvie.”

“I can double what your father pays you.”

“As tempting as that sounds, I like having you around. You make me look good.”

“Will your daddy whip you if you’re not with someone like me?” I already knew that answer. Lord Pike was known for his heavy-handed tactics. The man was a brute.

“We blue bloods must stick together.” He chuckled lazily.

“I’ve got to go,” I said.

“Tomorrow. In London. Meet me at our regular. Yeah?”

I exhaled. “Okay.”

Someone wake me out of this fucking nightmare.

In need of some advice, I headed over to Declan’s house to speak to Theadora, since she knew of that disgusting sex tape in all its sordidness.

“I thought you’d be in London.” Declan kissed my cheek.

“Not in the mood.” I smiled tightly. “Just dropping in for a cup of tea with your darling wife and to cuddle Julian.”

Just as I spoke, my nephew raced out and wrapped his little arms around Declan’s leg. He was so cute that the angst I’d arrived with faded instantly, and I giggled for the first time in a while.

“Actually, there’s something I need to tell you.” Declan looked serious, and my mood reverted to its earlier gloom.

“Oh?” I followed him into the living room with the astounding leadlight windows.
