Why the fuck isn’t his father doing something?

I puffed loudly, not hiding my unwillingness, and excused myself. The expression of concern etched on my mother’s brow remained as she watched us move away.

I looked over at Carson, whose eyes were all over us. That was his job to watch. I just wanted those eyes all over me naked, and not with this fucking tosser.

We stood in the hallway with black-and-white images of famous Hollywood scenes shot in Paris. One of which was Audrey Hepburn, standing in front of the Eiffel Tower with open arms welcoming the world. Without Bram, that would be me—dancing down the Champs-Élysées while pointing at all the pretty sights with Carson by my side.

Oh, give me back my life.

“I’ve got some sniff. I thought we could share a line and make a night of it. What do you say?” A wicked smile brushed Bram’s mouth.

“I’m off everything. Only drinks. That’s it. I’m even cutting the ciggies.”

“You’re becoming a fucking bore.”

“I don’t want to be with you. I want this to end. Find yourself another rich girl to hang off. My family aren’t idiots. They don’t want you around.” I took a breath. “My mother won’t give me a penny if I keep seeing you.”

His face darkened. “Fuck you, telling me what to do.” I went to walk off when he grabbed my arm. “Where are you going?”

“To talk to your father.”

He laughed. “He doesn’t give a shit. He wants this. He thinks the video’s a great idea.” He grabbed me by the wrist.

“Let me go. You’re hurting me,” I said.

“Let’s have this out in privacy, shall we?”

“Step away,” a deep, familiar voice commanded.

Carson stood so close, I could smell him, and suddenly I felt safe.

“Fuck off gym junkie.”

“I said step away.” He stood over Bram. A giant against a shrivelled, horrible excuse for a man.

“Fuck off. This is between us.”

Carson’s eyes met mine. I know I wouldn’t want to have crossed him. Not that Carson would ever hurt me. Quite the opposite.

But Bram was playing with fire. A complete idiot. I thought of Cary’s earlier comment about the delusional stupid being overconfident. That was Bram all right.

Carson stood close, dwarfing Bram.

Tall, solid, and dependable meets scrawny, useless, and dangerous.

Bram stupidly pushed on Carson’s chest as though that would knock him away.

Good try. Not in a million years.

I stepped away. My voice was trapped in my throat with a scream trying to get out.

He kept trying to push him like he might be a megalith. Carson exhaled and did what any self-respecting human would do. He picked Bram up by his ripped designer jacket.

While Bram thrashed about, he yelled at me, “Do you want the world to see how much you loved Killian’s cock in your mouth?”

I scrunched into a ball and buried my face in my hands.

People raced out to watch the show. They must have heard that last comment. How could they not? And then, my mother arrived with Cary. Her alarmed expression told me she’d heard.
