“Oh god, no. I’ll be thirty soon, and then I’ll come into a billion pounds.”

He rolled his eyes.

“What? You’d prefer me destitute?”

Shrugging, he let out a sigh. “Not to that extreme. This is all so strange. I never expected to fall for someone rich.”

A big smile grew on my face. It felt like sunshine pouring over me. “You’ve fallen for me?”

His gaze held mine while searching for the right answer. He nodded faintly like it was a tough admission.

“Why are you looking so sad?” I wanted to fall into his arms and kiss him all over, but he was confusing me.

“I’m just not sure how this will work and whether I’m just a plaything. A novelty.”

My brows gathered. “Fuck, Carson. Do you think I’m that shallow?”

“Well… no.” He rolled his lips, something he did when pressed. “But Savvie, since I’ve known you, you’ve dated a lot of men.”

“I liked you from the moment we met. You must have seen that.” I knotted my fingers. “And if I hadn’t thrown myself at you, you wouldn’t have asked me out, right?”

“I would have tried to hit on you from the moment I laid eyes on you, Savvie, but it was complicated. And I thought…” He took a deep breath and sighed.

“You thought what?”

“That you were too beautiful for me.”

I laughed. “Have you looked in the mirror lately?”

He returned a tight smile. “I thought I was just another man you flirted with.”

I rolled my eyes and let out an exasperated sigh. “Shit, Carson. You think I’m some empty-headed bimbo.”

He raised his palms in defence. “Hey, I never said that. I’ve never seen you that way.”

“How have you seen me, then?” I inclined my head. “What was your first impression.”

He ambled into the adjoining room and returned with a bottle of whisky. “Do you want some?”

Nodding, I took the glass, and our fingers touched.

A smile grew on his face, and I almost forgot the intense discussion we’d been having.

But as he sipped his whisky pensively, I still felt on edge and impatient for a response.

“Well?”

“You take my breath away, Savvie. I find it hard to speak sometimes when I’m around you. I feel seriously out of my depth. Inadequate, mentally speaking.” His mouth twitched into a half-smile.

“Oh my god. I don’t want you to feel that way. We’ve been equals here, haven’t we?”

He nodded. “But this is neutral ground, and you’ve needed my help, which I like.” He paused for my response, but I wanted to hear more. “I can’t even imagine how I’d fit into your life. At night, it’s amazing. I love being in your room, watching you parade in your sexy lace numbers, and sending me wild. I mean the day-to-day stuff.”

“If you wanted me, you’d try.” I went to walk away when he stopped me and pulled me into his firm chest. Of course, I melted.

“I’ve never spent this much time with a woman before.”

My eyes widened. “You’ve never had a girlfriend?”
