"What fear?" she wondered, worry blossoming inside of her. Was he afraid of becoming a father? If he was, why? Didn't he want that? "Is it too early? Should we have spoken about it first?"

She instantly became alarmed, that she had perhaps somehow forced this upon him, without even discussing it with him first, and now–

"No, no," he reassured her instantly. "That is not it at all. I think the timing could not be more perfect."

"I know we haven't discussed it, but–"

"That doesn't matter," he told her lovingly. "I'm just afraid that I won't know what to do."

"When the baby comes?" she wondered.

"Yes," he admitted. She could see that it took a lot of courage to admit such a thing. For this, she loved him even more, for showing her his weakness and still knowing that she would love him no matter what. "I'm afraid that I won't be able to connect with the baby, that I won't know how to behave."

"You will," she smiled. "It comes naturally. You are such a sweet, kind soul that I cannot possibly imagine you being anything other than a loving father."

He smiled back. "You know, that is exactly what Andrew said."

"See?" she told him. "He knows you even better than I do, and he's told you the same thing. That should assure you of the genuine sincerity of those words. Besides, you'll see for yourself when the baby comes. Now, or later."

"I'd rather it be now," he chuckled. "I'm impatient now."

"I know," she admitted. "Me, too."

They both placed their hand on her belly at the same time, wondering if there was a baby in there now. She truly hoped there was. His fears were so endearing. He wanted to be the best father, the best husband, the best everything for them. And he was. He most certainly was.

She snuggled next to him and closed her eyes. She dozed off almost instantly, dreaming about their future. It was filled with joy and happiness, with children's laughter and little feet running about their mansion. She didn't even know how badly she wanted all of that, with him. Now, she was so close to obtaining that dream. All she needed to do was open her eyes and take one day at a time. Eventually, they would get there... together.

PREVIEW: A DUKE TRAPPED IN DESIRE

PROLOGUE

LONDON, ENGLAND

“I’m late. I’m never late.” James sighed as he descended the stairs, moving from his lodgings to the gambling hall he owned. This late, the candles were glistening brightly. He knew if he passed through one vast door, he’d walk straight into the gambling rooms.

On one side, he’d see the hungry men, greedy for money as they leaned over the tables. Like dogs at their feeding bowls, ravenous, the men tried to grab the money, offering feeble cards and bets to try to win from him.

James smiled slightly as he looked at that door, adjusting his tailcoat before he turned his back on it.

Not tonight. Tonight, I have somewhere else to be.

He was choosing to be late. An invitation from his younger brother to a ball was so rare that, ordinarily, he never would have chosen to be late, but tonight, it was necessary. One of his gambling customers had not just asked to see him, but it had become imperative.

Making his way across the hall, he turned to another door, this one much smaller than the last and placed between two marble busts, bearing the faces of eighteenth-century philosophers. James opened the door, stepping into the room. The candles were lit here too, with some placed in sconces on the walls, creating the appearance of stars following him down the corridor as he walked.

Eventually, he heard voices. They came from an open doorway at the far end of the corridor through which he could see a friend of his pacing. Michael Hawkins, known by many as the Viscount Thorne, was clearly losing his patience. With a hand rubbing his temple and his pacing relentless, their guest had to be pushing the Viscount’s limits.

James held himself back for a minute, hovering in the doorway and watching the meeting that was taking place.
