Shoving the USB into the slot, I pulled up the magnifying glass on the desktop of his Mac and typed in the code that would reveal any locked folders in the computer.

Five popped up, the little silver zipper across the blue folders showing that they would need a password to unlock them. None of them were labeled “Countertop color.” In fact, they didn't have any labels at all.

That was unusual. Most people who harbored secrets on their hard drives tried to pretend otherwise by creating a fake title. Maybe the “Countertop color” document was tucked inside one of the folders.

My head snapped up toward the door. Shit. I'd definitely heard approaching voices.

I didn't have time to uncover the code of each folder and sift through the files for the countertop document. Selecting all five locked folders, I selected copy and dragged them into the USB symbol in the corner.

Footsteps tapped down the hall.

The folders had twenty seconds left to download.

"C'mon, c'mon."

"See, all the cameras in the hall are out."

Oh, fuck.

"Maybe it's just an outage." Jessie's voice was slurred but discernible.

"We have back up power supplies for that very reason, Mr. Isaacs."

Fifteen seconds.

"And the cameras went out on the computer too?"

"Yes, sir."

Ten seconds.

"Show me."

The key to the office clicked in the lock.

Three. Two. One.

I ripped the USB out of the computer and did the only thing I could think of.

Sliding open the doors to the balcony, I slipped outside, shut the door, and stepped behind the cover of the curtains. It was only by pure luck that the office looked out on the deserted backyard instead of the packed front with its gate of paparazzi.

I clipped open my purse and stashed the USB inside.

The voices were muffled but became clearer as Jessie and the man he was with approached the desk on the opposite side of the door.

"See, the cameras on the hall are out."

"But nothing else?" Jessie asked. "Where's Carter at?"

"The front hall. Been watching him all night as you asked. He hasn't even left to take a piss break. And bartenders are watering down his drinks as you requested. He's not stupid enough to make a fool of himself tonight."

Carter. Why did that name sound so familiar?

"You don't know Carter. He becomes a senator, and his ego doubles in size."

"I think if he knew about the video of that night, he would have said something by now."

I clenched my eyes. What the fuck did I get myself into?
