Which made it pretty clear that she knew that I knew that she was carrying the abortion pill in her purse.

And I knew that she knew that I knew.

And so on.

At least, I think it was weird. I’m not great at reading these kinds of things.

And it also made it very clear that there was no way for me to bring the pill up. What would I say?

“Hey, noticed you’ve got the abortion pill. You knocked up?”

“Oh, someone’s going to have a rough day.”

“Yikes.”

Saying those things would make me a dick.

The ride to the hotel is awkward. It’s three rows; there’s a couple who are chatting with the driver, me, and the woman who ignores me. The entire ride, all the way to the check-in.

“Welcome to Wanderlust Resort,” the woman at the counter says to the redhead. “May I have your name please?”

I try not to listen. I really do.

“Michelle Abernathy.”

“One card?”

“Yes, please.”

“Your room is 213.” The receptionist gives Michelle directions, explaining the facilities and giving her a map.

“Umm…is there…” She pauses. “Is there a doctor on the island?”

My heart clenches. Her voice has a familiar wobble, the concern of a patient who’s nervous and a bit scared.

The receptionist doesn’t miss a beat. “There’s a clinic on the island, but most people fly to the bigger island if they can. There is a pharmacy in the town if you need any assistance. I can arrange a car for you?”

There’s a beat of silence, and then Michelle says, “I’ll let you know. Thanks.”

And there’s the whole reason I became a doctor. Usually, for me, it’s a kid who’s scared, clinging to their parent’s hand and hiding.

I can’t let her walk away, knowing she’ll be alone and frightened. I look at the ceiling, trying to find the right words. Pretty much nothing to go with except, “Hi, I’ve been eavesdropping on you and invading your privacy.”

“Sir?”

The person in line behind me nudges my elbow.

“Sir?” The receptionist, who’s name tag reads Myna, is talking to me, and I’m holding up the line. She’s unfazed and acts as if I haven’t been standing here staring at the ceiling.

I check in and get my one key card, telling Myna that my best friend Manny is staying with me and flying in later today.

I do note one very important thing—my room is next to Michelle’s.

I put my stuff inside and then step back out. The hotel has several different types of accommodations—I’m staying in one of the beachfront triplexes. The main entrance overlooks the resort property, a lush green jungle, while the back entrance, with a private patio for each unit, ends with a small staircase down to the beach.

My unit is the middle one. I remember that Michelle is next to me, but now I can’t remember which side it was.

I have a fifty-fifty chance, and I choose poorly.
