Shay gave him an exasperated look, and Mae nodded excitedly.

“Yes, yes, let me check.”

She frowned at Graham, and he shot her a confused look.No manners.

“Bad news. I have only one room left.”

Shay stiffened.

“Any good news?” Graham asked.

Mae nodded. “It has a king bed.”

Shay’s mind short-circuited. A bed. A single bed.With Graham.

“Thanks, but we’ll find another place.” Graham turned when Shay grabbed him.

“It’s late.”

“There’s other motels and inns nearby.”

“You won’t find any other motels. There’s the sci-fi convention in town and most places are booked. This is the best you’re going to get.” Mae shrugged.

The idea of traveling all night for another motel room wasn’t appealing to Shay. They were almost out of Arizona and into New Mexico, and sleeping in the car on the side of the road sounded dangerous.

“We’ll see about that.” Graham grabbed Shay’s elbow once more. “Let’s go.”

“Graham, be reasonable. Think about the places we’ve been already.”

Emotions warred within Graham’s eyes.

“We can make it work,” Shay told Mae.

“Make it work?” The color drained from his face.

“Yes…” she asserted. “We’ll take it.”

Shay wasn’t sure how they paid for the room. Or how she waited for Graham to gather her bags. Or followed Mae to the room. Or closed the door and watched Graham canvass the room for secret cameras and bugs.

She left him to search. After taking a shower, she sat on the edge of the bed in fresh PJs as he plugged in all of their electronics.

“I’m safe, Graham.” Shay’s voice came out raw.

He was standing on a chair inspecting a vent over the bed. He turned to her, freezing, his eyes roaming the silk shorts and tank top she wore.

“I’ll make sure of that.”

There were moments when she closed her eyes and she sawhim.Darin had had them both fooled.

Darin had been stalking her for months before that. For a mistake she’d made at twenty-two.

Graham coming in at the last minute had been a blessing, but a lesson neither of them had forgotten.

Shay didn’t realize she had closed her eyes and was rocking on the edge of the bed until she felt Graham scooping her into his arms. She pressed her face into the crook of his neck, his spicy cologne filling her nose.

“Shay…”

She allowed herself to sink into his strength and the way he massaged her back slowly. Silence filled the gaps of their breath as the exhaustion from the day sank into her limbs.
