CHAPTERSEVENTEEN
Tawny didn’t remember settingher alarm, but her chiming phone woke her up. Light streamed in through the edges of the curtains, implying it was morning already. She was alone in bed and wondered if Liam had spent the night or if he’d left.
Sheesh. After last night, Tawny was more confused than ever. She had believed that nothing could have topped having sex with Alex, but then Liam came along. He was just as playful and sexy in bed as his friend, but in a different way.
Each had been fantastic, so how was she to choose?
You don’t have to.
Tawny hoped that the little voice in her head knew what she was talking about, but now wasn’t the time to debate it. Since she had to be at work soon, Tawny rushed to the bathroom to take a quick shower and brush her teeth. Once dressed, she went out to the main area, but Zach was the only one at the counter.
“Morning,” he said. “Coffee’s in the pot, and you can make your own breakfast.”
She laughed. “What happened to the food service from yesterday?”
“Alex and Liam left early to see if they can find my med kit, keys, and driver’s license. It would suck if I have to replace everything.”
“No kidding, and it’s not like you can walk into the bank and ask for a new card.”
“That’s for sure. I’m assuming the men will shift to reach the spot quicker, because they have to head over to Uncle Josh’s place to start training. Considering the name of his ranch has the double G symbol in it, Uncle Josh might be a target as well.”
"That would be so horrible. I’m just happy the men will be over there, as well as Seth and Trevor. Alex said they were both good fighters.”
“They are, and they’ll want to make sure their dad stays safe. Too bad we have no idea when these vigilantes will strike next.” He watched her pour her coffee. “What’s on your agenda today?”
She smiled. “I’d ask if you wanted to help me at the center, but you can’t be seen anywhere.”
“I am well aware that I’m supposed to be dead. It sucks. Big time.”
“For me, it’s going to be business as usual. As much as I want to do something to help find these people, I’m not sure what I can do. Mom has warned all of the cousins that someone might be out to kill them, so I can’t enlist their help.”
“I’m glad.”
“I realize that our hearts are off center, but did David say how close the bullets he dug out of you were to where a normal heart would be?” she asked.
“I imagine he would have told Dad. It’s not like I was in any kind of shape to remember much of anything.”
She nodded. “During lunch, I’ll swing by Dad’s office and see what he’s learned. There were quite a few things he was working on.”
“Like?”
“He’s running the prints from your steering wheel through a database.”
“If the thief was the same person who shot me, I bet he’d be wearing gloves. Both of them were wrapped up tight against the cold.”
“I promise to call you should I learn anything. And call me if David answers you about the sedative on the bullets.”
“Will do. By the way, did you download the app for your phone to check to see if anyone is listening to your conversations or grabbing your messages?”
“No, but I will.” Zach stared off into space. “Are you okay?” she asked.
“Yeah. I’m fine. I was just thinking about this dream I had, or at least I think it was a dream.”
He didn’t know? “Could it have been a memory?”
“I don’t know.”
“What was it about?” Tawny finished off her coffee, placed the cup in the dishwasher, and sat back down. Arriving a few minutes late wouldn’t matter. Her brother was more important.
