“What are you thinking? That Brad is the same person who shot Zach and tried to shoot Ethan? And the person who Joe shot?”

“Maybe. Dad never did find the bullet in the garage. It might have been more than a graze.”

“You said he wasn’t limping.”

“Like I said, I didn’t pay all that much attention.”

“What about today when you saw him? Did you notice any limp then?” she asked.

“Actually, Brad texted me and asked for his assignment. I never saw him. I suppose I could have asked him to come into the office, but there was no reason for that.”

“Darn.”

He pulled up a picture on his phone. “This is Brad. I sent the picture to Zach to see if he could identify him, but he said he couldn’t be sure. The man was pretty covered up.”

“And Ethan said the guy who came into the garage wore a mask.”

“Yes. Do you have a picture of Julia we could show to Zach?” Mason asked.

“No, but I can’t believe she’d be some vigilante. She’s a fantastic assistant.”

“All the better to get in good with the boss.”

Tawny didn’t want to believe it, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t true. “If I can figure out a way to take her picture without it looking too obvious, I will.”

“Good.”

“If those two were responsible for shooting Zach and attempting to harm Ethan, I can’t imagine they’d be working on their own.” She snapped her fingers. “I wonder if Will has any new employees of late.”

“Because?”

She thought it obvious. “Didn’t General Armand say that a group of people infiltrate a town to learn who is who? Most likely, they would have arrived more or less at the same time.”

“You’re right. If I wanted to find out about the Grangers, I’d get a job at Will’s bar, Preston’s gym, and yes, the rescue center. People are coming and going all the time in all three of those places. I know that Anna is back manning the desk at Preston’s gym, but even she has days off. Though he could have hired a new cleaner or something.”

Tawny leaned her head back. “We should ask every Granger and roommate of a Granger if they’d hired anyone in the last two to three months.”

“This sucks, but yeah. Let me make some phone calls.”

She would have volunteered to take half the list, but she couldn’t call from her office. “You should stop by in the next couple of days and sweep my office for bugs again. Julia, if she’s guilty, could be there right now planting a new one.”

“I can do that.”

“Thank you. Will you follow Brad after he gets off work to see what he does? Julia said he doesn’t go anywhere other than home. If Brad and Julia are involved, they’d have to coordinate with others or to their boss at some point.”

“That’s assuming they have a leader,” Mason said.

This was becoming more and more difficult. “Let me walk across the street to the Double G and see if Will hired someone new. To get an inside scoop, maybe he could ask Julia out. He seemed very interested in her.”

“For what purpose? Do you think it will remove the target on his back?” Mason asked.

“No, but she might let something slip. Besides, if we need to disseminate false information, she’d believe it coming from herboyfriend.”

Mason shrugged. “It’s worth a try.”

Tawny stood. “I don’t want to be gone too long from the center. Brett will worry. Of late, I’ve been away from work more than I’ve been there.”

“Go. If I learn anything, I’ll call. Even if I don’t find something new, maybe I can pick up some pizza and meet you at your place when you get off work?”
