The receptionist quickly changes her tune, moving to type something into her computer. The exchange is quick and efficient. When the woman glances at me, Gabriel says, “Meine Frau.”

I don’t know a whole lot of the language, but Idoknow what that means.

My wife.

We receive a pair of keycards before the receptionist gestures toward the building’s elevators. Gabriel and I don’t speak until we’re in our room on the top floor. The moment the door closes, I ask again, “What the hell are you doing here?”

Gabriel’s first move is to lock the door. Probably a smart call, all things considered.

“You’re not doing this alone,” he says. “I won’t let you.”

“How did you even know where to find me?”

“You took my phone, remember? All I had to do was use theFind My Phoneapp on my iPad.”

“Why did you tell the lady downstairs we’re married?”

“A couple traveling together is a lot less suspicious.” He walks away and reaches for the room’s TV remote. He flicks it on, the news channel coming up on screen. I have no idea what the anchor’s saying, but the image of the train I was on makes things perfectly clear.

I put my hands on my hips. “That… wasn’t me.”

“You’re a shit liar.”

“And you’re shit at understanding when a favor’s been paid. Shouldn’t you be at home with Odette?”

His shoulders stiffen. He turns slowly and steps toward me, his eyes darkening. I’m suddenly breathless. Gabriel closes the space between us, reaching down to gently grasp my wrists. He presses his body against mine until my back’s against the wall, our hips flush against one another. He pins my hands above my head, barely an inch between our lips.

My skin feels like it’s on fire, my knees like jelly.

“The news says you were up against three men,” he says, his voice so low and powerful it vibrates the air out of my lungs.

“I handled my own,” I insist.

“You got lucky.”

I can’t stop staring at his mouth, can’t stop remembering the sensation of his hard body between my legs. “Gabriel—”

“I admire your determination,” he says, “but if you’re going to steal from Van Straus, you need backup. You can be the brains of the operation, and I’ll be your muscle.”

I breathe deeply, drinking in the smell of his earthy cologne. As much as I hate to admit it, the man has a point. I’ve never worked a job alone, and I know I’m not physically strong enough to protect myself.

Gabriel’s right. It was only because of luck and quick thinking that I was able to escape the train with my life. I might not be so lucky next time. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to have someone watching my back.

But I have to be careful. I know I do. I trusted Lucius like a brother, a member of our team, and look how well that turned out. Gabriel seems dead set on helping me, but I need to keep him at arm’s length. I’ll work with him, but that doesn’t mean I have to trust him.

“What’s in it for you?”

“You forget, petit oiseau. Your father is a dear friend of mine. I want him safe and alive just like you.”

I lick my lips, entranced by the way his gaze flits down to follow the motion.

“Okay,” I whisper, tilting my chin up. God, I want this man to kiss me again.

“Okay,” he echoes.

Gabriel releases my hands and lowers them slowly, his fingers settling gingerly on my hips. I don’t stop him when he carefully slips his fingers beneath the hem of my shirt. I don’t stop him when he strokes my bare waist with the pad of his thumb. And I swear to God, if he dips down to kiss me, I won’t stop him from doing that, either.

He pulls away.
