“Do you ever think about the day I met you and Jasmine there?”
Yes.“Not really. You?”
She lets out a small laugh. “Yeah. I do.”
“What do you think about?”
“How I was crying like a fool and then this handsome man comes over to see if I was okay.” She gives me another wry smile. “I should have known you were with Jasmine.”
“Want to know a secret?”
“Sure.”
“I was going to break-up with Jasmine that day, but then she begged me to go with her to meet her childhood friend.”
“What made you change your mind?”
“I’m not sure.” I pause. “Your turn.”
She hums under her breath. “Okay. This one makes me a bad person, but I can’t help it. It drives me crazy that Jasmine is hanging out with Dru.”
“I’m not the biggest fan of Dru, so I understand.”
Because Dru is just like Jasmine—someone who uses people to get what she wants.
“It just feels like a slap in the face. She knows how mean Dru and Stasia were to me growing up. Heck, you saw how Dru acted at the dinner, telling everyone about Richard. I just don’t get it.”
I say, “Jasmine likes to keep people around to stroke her ego.”
“Do you think that’s why she’s friends with me?”
Her baby blue eyes are wide, as if she’s never considered the possibility.
“Do you stroke her ego?”
“No.”
“Then that’s not why she’s friends with you.”
To be honest, I’m not sure why Jasmine keeps her around. Everyone in her circle offers something. A connection. Money. Ego stroking. Power. Ellie does none of those things.
She lets out a breath. “Good. Okay, your turn again.”
I pretend to think, knowing damn well what my next “secret” is.
“I enjoyed watching you squirm when I rubbed your foot. You were trying so hard to figure out if I knew it was you or not.”
She laughs. “You’re such a jerk.”
“I’ve been called worse. Got you the best foot rub of your life, didn’t it?”
“Yeah. I guess.” She bites her bottom lip. “This is horrible, and I’m going to blame all the wine I’ve had.”
