I move toward him, pulling him into the room before closing the door.

“Jafar, that night was a mistake.”

“Was it? Because I haven’t come that hard in a long time.”

Heat courses through me, but I shove the feelings aside. And I definitely don’t think about how he’s right. That was the best orgasm I’ve ever had in my freaking life.

“It was wrong.” I say firmly. I mean, at some point I’ll believe the words, right?

He stares at me. “Fine. We can play this your way.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing, friend. Better change. Jasmine is having dinner catered on the beach at seven.”

He opens the door to leave. As he does, I see Dru standing at the stairway. Crap. This probably looks so bad.

I call out to Jafar, “Just let me know if you need any more help with Jasmine’s surprise.”

He glances over his shoulder. “You’ve been plenty of help.”

He sidesteps Dru, making his way downstairs.

Dru turns to me. “What surprise?”

“Keep your voice down,” I say in a loud whisper. “Jafar wants to do something for Jasmine, since she’s been working so hard with the gala.”

“Why didn’t he ask me?”

“Maybe he’s going to.”

“Well?”

“Well, what?”

She sighs. “What did you suggest?”

“Jewelry from Tiffany’s.” The lie rolls right off my tongue.

Her eyebrows lift. “Good pick.”

“Did you need something?”

“No, I just wanted to see where you ended up. Jasmine said you didn’t want to stay with Al.”

She waits expectantly, so I stand to the side. “Come look around.”

She doesn’t waste a second, looking around with glee in her eyes.

“This is a dump compared to my room, but I guess you’re used to living like this. Your room at mother’s wasn’t much bigger, was it?”

I think the word she’s looking for is closet, but I don’t comment. And I definitely don’t point out that I had a nice bedroom until my father died. It will only fuel her.

I say, “I’m going to hop into the shower before dinner.”

She looks at her own clothes, nodding. “Good idea.”

When she’s gone, I close the door leading to the gym. There’s no lock, so I have to hope no one comes in. Padding back to the room, I unpack and hang my dresses in the closet, so they don’t wrinkle. The sundress I have on is a bit too casual for dinner, so I decide to wear the short, black cocktail dress I brought. It has tiny rhinestones that sparkle when the light hits it. The neckline is plunging, so I’ll have to rely on the built-in-bra. It’s not something that I would usually wear, but I kind of want to make a statement tonight. I’m not entirely sure what that statement is, but I’ll figure it out.
