“Yes.” I smiled.

“How about an ornament?”

“That sounds like a great idea. Better than the ugly sweater I was thinking about. I thought it would be a cute gift.” The thought had faded quickly the minute I stepped into this world of designer clothes and fancy shoes. “Lead the way.” I gestured toward the escalators.

“I’m Paula.” She offered me her hand. “Nice to meet you, Mrs. Buratti.”

“Luce, please.”

She nodded kindly and ushered me to the home goods floor, where their Christmas decor took up most of the space. I was immediately drawn to a knight nutcracker dressed in intricate clothing with armor made of wood. “He’s beautiful.”

“It’s a limited-edition Kurt Adler. Great choice.”

“This is it. This feels right.” I beamed at her. “Wow, that was easy. Thank you.”

“Would you like me to hold it for you while you browse some more.” She pointed up the escalator toward the women’s department.

“Yes, please.” I smiled at her because I knew exactly how I planned to wrap Santino’s gift. I handed her the nutcracker and headed toward the lingerie section.

I’d always thought lacy underwear and lingerie were cheesy, but Santino seemed to have a thing for them. So much so that the night I went to look for him to kill him, he hadn’t moved a finger to stop me. Now I knew that the sheer bodysuit I’d worn under my velvet cloak had been all the distraction I had needed to take his own gun and shoot him.

How did I ever think we could be a normal couple? I literally shot him the night we met.

I ran my hands over a red-velvet bodysuit. The Christmas theme added a new layer of cheesy, in my opinion, but I grabbed it anyway. The top was no more than two strips of cloth that tied into a bow over my breasts. In my mind, I imagined Santino pulling on the fabric to free me from the fitted garment. I giggled and headed for the fitting rooms to try it on.

No one was there to help me, so I just ambled toward the back and slipped into the last stall, letting the door shut behind me. With a big grin on my face, I took off my jeans, sweater, and bra. I donned the fabric over my legs and pulled until I was able to wrap the top around my chest. I glanced up at the mirror and shook my head at the major side boob. Why did Santino think this was sexy?

As soon as I thought of him, he appeared in my line of sight in the mirror. I turned around to face him smiling. Then I remembered I was supposed to be mad at him and pursed my lips, folding my arms over my chest to cover up.

Santino stood in the threshold with both eyebrows up in surprise. His eyes darkened in the next breath, and I stepped back. “What are you doing here?”

“You disappeared. My guys didn’t think it would be appropriate to look for you here.” He flashed me a wolfish grin.

“And it was appropriate for you?”

“Very much so.” He took a single step inside and shut the door behind him.

The click of the lock sparked a charge between my legs. “I’m still mad at you.”

“I know. I looked for you in the morning, but you were gone.”

“You were drunk.”

“True. I ran into Enzo and Rex last night.”

“And a bottle of whiskey.” I ran a hand through my hair and then over the nape of my neck. My own skin and hair felt silky to my touch. In truth, all my senses felt heightened. Suddenly the lights were too bright, and the drumming of my heart filled the space.

“And a bottle of whiskey.” He echoed my words and chuckled, reaching for the velvet bow containing my breasts. “Is this for me?”

“I thought you might like it.” I inhaled a breath and stepped back until the cold surface of the mirror braced against my heated skin.

“Let me show you how much I like it.” He caged me in and bent down to kiss me.

Our tongues collided. And in that moment, I forgot about why we were fighting. I buried my fingers in his hair and brought him closer to me. He responded by cupping my butt cheek and hooking my leg over his hip. In this position, every inch of me was available to him. The length of him rubbed against my clit, and I spiraled down the usual frenzy of desire. He dry-humped me like this for a long while, until my lips felt bruised and my legs went numb.

My heart thrashed so hard in my chest, it hurt. My whole body ached from wanting him so much. If we weren’t in a public place, I would beg him to take me. I came up for air, panting. “Let’s go home. You’ve made your point.” I never should’ve left this morning.

No matter where I went, he would find me. And no matter how far I went, I would always find a reason to come back to him.
