Only, with Carter, it did. And, God, was it amazing. He was amazing.

“Well, well, well, look what the cat dragged in.”

“Jesus, Abs.” I clutch my chest startled by her presence. “You scared the shit out of me. Why are you lurking in the dark?”

“I’m not lurking,” Abbie says as she sits up and stretches. “I fell asleep on the couch, and your noisy ass woke me up. So, how did things go with Daddy’s quarterback?”

I groan. “Don’t say it like that.”

“You mean like what it is?”

“I’m not doing this.” Retreating to my room, I lie down on the bed. I just want tonight. One night to revel in a man who was more than I expected and exactly what I’ve always dreamed of. A man I will never be with, thanks to my last name.

I knew it was a long shot but had hoped Abbie would let it drop. I should have known better. Sanding in my doorway, arms folded across her chest, she looks at me expectantly.

“It was amazing, okay? He’s amazing. Smart, funny, gorgeous. A gentleman when he should be and not when he shouldn’t.” I shoot up to a sitting position. “He drew us a bubble bath.”

“He what?”

The stunned look on her face is exactly what I imagine mine must have looked like when he led me into the bathroom.

“He drew us a bubble bath.” My heart melted the moment I sank into the water and leaned back against him, his uninjured arm holding me to him. It felt like heaven. It felt right. “We talked, we cuddled. It was… perfect.”

“And he did this all after you told him who you are?” she pries, her eyes filled with concern.

“We never really got around to that.”

“Lexie, what the hell are you doing?”

My fingers toy with the material of my dress. “I just… I like him, Abs. I just wanted one night.”

“One night? None of this sounds like one-night stand kind of stuff.”

“Yeah, well, trust me, it was.”

As much as I hated to do it, I knew I had no choice. As soon as Carter fell asleep, I bolted. No note. No number. Nothing. I disappeared into the middle of the night with no way for him to find me.

“You did the right thing,” Abbie tells me. “After you did the wrong thing, but still.”

Nothing about being with Carter tonight felt wrong, though. It felt so terribly right. And now, I’ll never get to feel that again. I’ll never have his arms around me or hear the corny jokes he whispered in my ear that had me laughing so hard, I snorted.

“Thanks for the support,” I groan, flopping back on the bed.

Abbie lies next to me with her hands clasped on her stomach and her feet crossed at her ankles. “I shouldn’t be encouraging this but… tell me all about him.”

Rolling onto my side, I prop my head on my hand. “His body was impeccable. I mean, I have seen my share of hot athletes, but Carter? He brings it to a whole new level.”

“And the sex?”

“Even with only one arm, it was out of this world.”

“Like in the top five?”

“Like, all the top five.”

“Five times?”

I smile wickedly.
