“Everything okay?” Chase asks.

Since the accident, I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch anything sports-related. No highlights. No practices. Not even baseball. No sports.

“Can we watch something else?”

“Thought you might like to see the highlights.”

“You thought wrong.”

“I get it, but…”

“No, you don’t. You’ve never had an injury that took you out for more than one game. You’ve never had to sit on the sidelines and watch your dream come true and not be a part of it.”

Chase flicks off the television and sets the remote down.

“You’re right. I haven’t and I can’t even imagine how hard this must be on you. But it’s one season, man. One season of years to come. You’ll be able to play again.”

One season that feels like a lifetime.

“You said it yourself, Chase. You. Can’t. Imagine. So, don’t pretend to understand how I’m feeling.”

“I’m not pretending. It’s called empathy, asshole. I’m just trying to remind you of the shit that you already know, but the anger and frustration has clouded your brain. And that? That shit I do understand. More thanyouknow. Now, quit being a dick and watch the game.”

With my hand clenched at my side, I turn back toward the television. It’s like a torture therapy. Watching it, I feel like I want to scream, but the feeling eases the longer we sit there. Seeing the field makes me hungry. Hungry to get back out there.

With a renewed sense of purpose, in part because of Chase, but mostly because of Lexie, I push Chase out and call Todd.

“Meet me at the gym in twenty.”

As much of an asshole as I’ve been lately, Todd does as I ask.

The minute he arrives, we get to work. Hard work. More work than I’ve put in this entire time.

Chase is right. This is one season. And maybe, just maybe, if I work hard enough, less. It’s high time I take responsibility for my arm and the further damage that’s been done to it.

I thank Lexie and her magical pussy, even though I know it was more than that. It was her—every damn piece of her. It was nothing more than a glimpse, but what I saw, I liked.

Chapter7

Lexie

How is this even possible?

Standing only a few feet from me is the man who was supposed to be a one-night stand. A very off-limits man who I had every intention of avoiding.

Fate.

Kismet.

It has to be.

In all this time, I’d never seen him around here. Now, twice in a week, he’s popped into my life? If it wasn’t such a bad idea, I would say we were destined to be. It’s that very thought that has my feet moving toward him rather than away from him.

“Carter?”

He turns and smiles broadly when he sees me.

“Hey there, princess.”
