“One date, Lexie. What do you have to lose?”

One date.

“What do you have to lose?” he asks.

If only he knew.

“One date,” I tell him.

* * *

Our one date turned into two, then three, and before I knew it, Carter and I had spent seven straight days together.

Keeping things quiet, out of the press wasn’t an issue. Carter enjoys his privacy and most of our time is spent at his place, watching movies. Like now.

His arm is around me, my head on his shoulder, and a horror movie is on the massive television.

“Run you idiot,” I shout at the television. “Why the hell would you go up the stairs?”

“You know they can’t hear you, right?” Carter begins to laugh the moment the words leave his lips.

“They might still be alive if they could.” Trying to distract him from teasing me further, I crawl into his lap. My fingernails run along the back of his neck, causing him to squirm. “You know Carter, you shouldn’t pick on me.”

“Oh, really? Why is that?”

I grind against his growing erection. “Because if you don’t play nice, we won’t be going for round two today.”

Carter groans. “I promise. No more teasing.”

“Good.” I move off his lap.

“What? Where are you going?”

“To order pizza. I’m starving.”

“No, you’re evil. That’s what you are.”

“I prefer the term wicked. And I promise you, I’m wicked in all the right ways.”

“Don’t I know it.” Carter leans back on the couch, eyes on me as I grab my phone and dial the pizza place where we’ve ordered from several times this week.

It shouldn’t be like this. I shouldn’t feel like this.

Two weeks and the man has me wrapped around his finger and falling head over heels in love with him. It’s too much. Too soon.

Isn’t it?

Normally, I would go to Abbie with something like this, but I haven’t exactly been honest with her, either. She thinks I’m working a lot. Staying with my dad to help out while my stepmom is out of town. She has no idea that all my time is being spent with one Carter Wallace.

After placing the order, we head out to the back patio. The sun is just starting to set and the night air has a bit of a chill. Settling into one of the chairs, I study Carter as he turns on the gas firepit. He’s proven to be so much more than the media gives him credit for, especially since the accident.

He’s not a party guy. He rarely drinks, which confuses me all the more as to how he was involved in a drunk driving accident. The Carter that I’ve come to know, he wouldn’t do that.

He takes the seat next to me, and a comfortable silence falls over us. While we may not be speaking, my mind sure as hell is racing. Worrying about things like my dad finding out. Carter hating me when he finds out the truth. This week has been everything I wanted and everything I can’t have. Shouldn’t have.

“Tell me about you, Lexie,” he says as he takes a seat next to me. His good arm wraps around my shoulders and pulls me close.

Every touch, every kiss makes it that much harder to tell him the truth, to walk away, to lose this thing we have.
