“Yeah?”

“My shoulder?”

“What about it?”

His eyes drop down, and mine follow. He’s looking at his chest. His bare chest. A bare chest with my hand splayed against it, touching and groping.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry.”

Chapter12

Carter

She may have been sorry, but I wasn’t. The feel of her hands on me was amazing, familiar. Just as it’s been since the day we met. It’s a touch that makes me crave more of it. A feeling I can’t let go of, despite how angry I am with her.

“Ow. Fuck.” I don’t mean to say it out loud, put the pain that just radiated through my arm left me no choice.

“No pain, no gain.” She doesn’t apologize or look remotely upset for the fact that she just hurt me.

“Yeah, well, my arm never felt like that when Todd worked on it.”

“Then Todd wasn’t doing his job.” She releases my arm. “That’s good for now.” Lexie moves off the bed and stands before me. “I think we should talk.”

“I don’t think you want to hear what I have to say to you.”

“Maybe not, but I need to. I’ll do whatever it takes to get this behind us and move forward.”

If I didn’t have to talk to my dad the minute this little session is over, I would blow her off. Postpone the discussion until I was ready for it—if or when that ever happens. Worse than having to face Lexie is having to face the disappointment in my father’s eyes. Anger I can handle. His disappointment, I can’t.

“Fine. You want to talk, let’s talk. Let’s start with why you lied to me. Why you didn’t tell me who you were.” The moment she opens her mouth to speak, I continue. “Was this all just part of your master plan? Get me into bed, get something to blackmail me with, then use me to get to your dream job?”

“What? No. There was no plan. You approached me.”

“So, now this is my fault?”

“That’s not what I’m saying.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“The only thing I can… I’m sorry, Carter.”

“Sorry for what, Lex? Lying to me? Tricking me? Or ruining my fucking life?”

“Your life was on a downward slope way before you met me.”

“You don’t know shit about my life.”

“I know you drove drunk and crashed your car, nearly killing yourself and your brother. I know that you’ve spent the last two months screwing around and doing stupid shit, causing damage to your already fucked-up arm. I also know you felt the same thing I did that night and every night since. You like me as much as I like you. Want me as much as I want you… maybe even more.”

“Past tense, princess. All past tense.”

A knock on the bedroom door stops Lexie from continuing.

“Everything okay in here?” my dad asks as he enters the room. “I heard some loud voices.”

“Just some tough love, Mr. Wallace,” Lexie says with a smile.

“Does that mean your therapy session is done?”
