“Come by tomorrow,” Char says. “And bring that girlfriend of yours.”

“Therapist, Char. Just. My. Therapist.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.”

Chapter13

Lexie

My heart sank the moment I heard the roar of the truck’s engine.

Carter left me here alone in an unfamiliar house with complete strangers. Not that he isn’t essentially a stranger himself. We may have intimate knowledge of each other, but after today, it’s obvious we know nothing about one another.

After the long car ride, I’m feeling too antsy to hole up here in the room. Putting on my bravest face, I make my way downstairs. Just as I reach the bottom step a man walks through the door. He resembles Carter, but his features are much more indicative of Carter’s mother, Rebecca.

“Well, hello, gorgeous,” the man says as he lowers his sunglasses, eyes roaming my body at length.

“Hi. You must be Cody.”

“I am,” he says, extending his hand to me.

I take his hand and shake it. “Lexie.”

“And what brings you to my house, Lexie?”

“Your brother. Carter.”

The man shakes his head. “I have no clue how that little shit gets so lucky all the time.”

“I would hardly say he’s been lucky lately,” I argue, though I’m not sure why. “But I’m not with Carter. I’m here as his therapist.”

He looks me up and down again. “Yeah, sure you are.”

“I am. I’m also Coach Masterson’s daughter.” I’m willing to throw out whatever I have to get him to back off. The last thing we need is someone poking around and finding out the truth.

“I’ll be damned. Carter’s got bigger balls than I thought.”

“You must be hard of hearing. I’m Carter’s therapist. End of story.”

“Whatever you say, Lexie Masterson.” He glances around the room as though he’s looking for something, or more likely, someone. “Where is my little brother, anyway?”

“Beats me. He hopped in his truck and left.”

I know that the past two days have been hard on Carter. They’ve been hard on me, too. I just can’t believe he’d leave me here like this. Alone. Uncertain.

“Idiot.” Cody shakes his head, then nods toward a doorway. “Have you had a tour yet?”

“Just to my room.”

“Come on, I’ll show you around.”

“That’s not necessary,” I tell him. My instincts are screaming at me that this could only cause more trouble.

“I don’t know how long you’re going to be here, but I want you to feel comfortable. I’m sure my parents would agree.”

“Are you sure? I don’t want to be any trouble.”

“Yeah, hanging out with a gorgeous woman is a real hardship.” He rolls his eyes and moves into the next room. “You coming?”
