The guys.

The guys that included Cody.

Motherfucker.

“It was you? You posted that fucking video?”

“Sold it. For a pretty penny, too.”

“What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you do this to me?”

“Someone needed to bring you down a peg or two.” He laughs. He fucking laughs at the shit storm he turned my life into.

“You son of a bitch.” I stand in disbelief. “You’re supposed to be my brother. You’re supposed to protect me, not destroy me. After everything I’ve done for you, this is how you repay me?”

More laughter as though my words, my pain, mean nothing.

“Go to hell, Cody.”

Lexie emerges from the house as I storm toward it.

“Everything okay?”

“Just fucking great.”

Chapter17

Lexie

After visiting with Char and Luke, I was filled with hope. Carter and I were getting along. Things almost seemed… normal.

When we returned to the house, I retreated to my room, afraid of messing up any progress we had made. As I went over the program I wanted to treat Carter with I heard voices outside. Voices that were escalating in both sound and anger. Dropping the book, I hurried down the stairs and onto the back porch. Carter and Cody seemed to be in some sort of standoff, Carter fuming about something.

He stormed toward the house, and when I attempted to talk to him, he blew me off and went into the house. As much as I hated to leave him alone to deal with whatever it was that was going on, I feared my presence would only make things worse. Only it seems I didn’t need to be near him to make things worse. That happened all on its own.

The next morning, I received a text from Carter, telling me to meet him at the gym.

Borrowing his mother’s car, I drove to the gym, where he was already on the treadmill.

I tried talking to him, but he wouldn’t even make eye contact with me. It was as if someone flipped a switch and things got worse than they had been. Whatever progress I thought we made yesterday was gone.

It’s been over a week since that day. A week of distance, pissy moods, and half-assed therapy sessions. Despite all that, his arm is improving. Not at the rate I would like but still, improvement is improvement and the fact that he’s getting better is all that really matters.

And I’m exhausted.

Even though our sessions haven’t been what I would like them to be, and Carter is my only client, the gravity of the situation is wearing on me.

Having lost him for good, I’ve put my focus back on my career, on working for the Knights. To do that, I need to heal Carter. It’s a task I’m more than capable of, but he isn’t making it easy for me to accomplish.

After spending the better part of the last week stressing and driving myself crazy, I decided I deserved a break. Today is that day. A perfect day at that. The sun is shining, and there’s a slight breeze, making it not quite as hot as you would expect for this time of year.

The minute I get out of bed I text Carter and cancel our session for today and head off to town.

Time to reset, recharge, and rejuvenate.

My first stop is at the little coffee shop in town. As wonderful as Carter’s mother can cook, her coffee making is not up to par. At least, not for me. Coffee in hand, I walk through the small town and around the nearby park. My head is still foggy, but my body feels fantastic from the exercise and fresh air.

When I get back to the house, I settle down on one of the rocking chairs outside and just admire the picturesque view as I soak up the sun.
