“And it’s none of your damn business what she does… or who.”

Carter’s entire body tenses, frozen in a rage he’s trying to fight.

“Nothing is going on between me and Cody,” I say, trying to ease the tension. “He’s just trying to goad you.”

Carter pulls me flush against him, lips claiming mine in a kiss that leaves me stunned and wanting more. When he ends the kiss, he looks up at Cody, not me, with a smirk.

“Like I said… mine.”

“Enough,” Char says, shoving us toward the door. “Out. Now.”

The minute we’re outside, Carter releases me and begins to pace, his hand running through his hair. His tall frame towers over me as he tells me in no uncertain terms, “Stay away from Cody.”

After the display in there, I have every intention to, but after the way he’s treated me, I don’t really feel like taking orders from Carter.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.”

“You’re mine. You’re…”

“I don’t belong to anyone. Sure as hell not you after what you’ve put me through this week.”

“What I’ve put you through?” Carter laughs as he turns away from me. “You lied to me. You used me. You fucking ripped out my goddamn heart.”

“I didn’t mean to do any of those things. This isn’t easy for me, either. I care about you, Carter. I don’t want things to be like this, but you blowing me off for a week? Unable to even look at me?”

“That had nothing to do with you.”

His argument makes no sense.

He points his finger to the door.

“And everything to do with him.”

Chapter18

Carter

I’m out of control. Only this time, I’m sober and out of control. And I don’t care.

Seeing her with him set off something inside me.

“What are you talking about?”

“He did it. He sold the video. He… Fuck.”

“We really need to take this somewhere more private,” Char suggests.

Seemingly unaffected by my statement, Lexie makes her way over to me.

“Let’s go back to the house.”

“I’ll drive,” Char offers, but I shake my head.

“I’m fine. I haven’t been drinking.” I look at Lexie. “Come with me?”

She gives a soft nod.

Char pulls her in for a hug and whispers something to her, probably to call her if I’m being a dick. Thing is, right now, my problem isn’t with Lexie. Yes, she’s a major factor, but not the source. No, my problem is with Cody and what he did to us.
