“He still doesn’t have to know about the tape. We could tell him we fell for each other while we were here,” she suggests.

I nod in agreement. A partial truth and nothing but that partial truth.

When we arrive back at my parents, my mom and dad are sitting on the couch.

“Where have you two been?” my mom asks when we walk into the house.

“We spent the day at the zoo.”

“That’s nice dear,” she says. “Did you two have fun?”

“Yeah, we did,” I say with a huge beaming smile. “Listen, there’s something that I need to tell you.”

There’s a sly smile on my mother’s face.

“Lexie and I… we’re together.”

“It’s about time.” My mother jumps from her seat and hugs the both of us.

Lex turns to my father. “I love, Carter. I swear to you, I would never do anything to hurt your son. He means the world to me.”

Laughter emerges from the doorway. Turning my head, I see Cody standing here.

“Idiot. You’re going to destroy your whole career over some girl.”

“Oh, come on, Cody. If anyone almost destroyed my career, it was you. Take credit man, you certainly deserve it.”

“Alright, what the hell is going on with you two?” my dad asks.

“Nothing, dad. We’re just messing around,” Cody says.

“I told you, man, I’m done protecting you.” I take a deep breath in before looking at my father. “Cody is the reason I’m in this sling.”

“Shut up, Carter,” Cody demands.

“He was driving my car, high, and crashed.”

“Is that true?” Tears well in my mother’s eyes as she looks between me and Cody.

“Damn it, Cody, answer your mother,” my father tells him.

“It was an accident,” Cody argues.

“A drug-induced accident,” I say.

“I thought you were clean.” My father’s face falls, guilt registering on it.

“This isn’t your fault, Dad. Cody’s become a top-notch liar.”

“Me?” Cody scoffs. “What about your girlfriend? Huh? Lying to you. To her dad. To our parents?” He turns to my mom. “Lexie is the woman in Carter’s fun little video.”

“And Cody’s the one who sold it to the press,” Lexie adds.

“How could you do this do this to your brother?” Mom asks, her voice cracking as she speaks.

“It’s always about him, isn’t it? We all have to make sure Carter’s, okay? To hell with Cody!”

“This? Again? The poor Cody shit is getting old.”
