Whether I tell him or just walk away, the result is still the same. We’re over before we even began. So long Carter.

“There are a million guys out there, Lex.”

I know she’s right, so why, after ten minutes, am I so dead set on wanting the one I can’t have?

Having decided to do the right thing, I make my way back to the bar where Carter is still standing. There’s a woman there, clearly hitting on him. Rather than continuing toward him, I should veer to the exit and make a run for it. Let him enjoy his time with a woman who I’m sure is much less complicated than me.

Run, Lexie. Walk away and don’t look back. It’s better this way. For both of you.

My feet, however, are unwilling to listen to my solid advice and move more quickly in his direction, inexplicable jealousy urging them on.

“Sorry about that,” I say as I loop my arm through his.

“I was starting to think you weren’t coming back.”

“Who’s your friend?”

“Lexie, this is Lena. Lena, this is Lexie.”

The woman greets me with a warm smile and extends her hand to me. “Nice to meet you, Lexie.”

Hesitantly, I shake the woman’s hand.

“You two enjoy your evening.” She stands on her tip toes and presses a kiss to Carter’s cheek. “Let me know when you’re free for dinner so we can catch up.” Her voice is casual, relaxed, like they’re actually just friends.

“Everything okay?” Carter asks.

“Huh?”

“You and your friend disappeared for quite a while.”

“Oh, right. Sorry. Yes, everything is fine.” I stare at him, unsure whether to blurt out my last name or merely say goodbye and leave. “I just…”

“Just what?”

“I just want to dance. Is that okay?”

“It’s more than okay.”

With my hand in his, he leads to me the dance floor. To the beginning of the end.

Chapter4

Carter

At her request, we head to the dance floor. Being with her, dancing and laughing, it’s the freest I’ve felt in ages. I’m enjoying her, this, us, so fucking much.

Unable to restrain myself anymore, I bend my head and capture her lips with mine. The kiss burns me, ignites a fire in me I have never felt before. To my satisfaction she responds quickly, her tongue dancing with mine.

God, this is good. So good. Exactly what I need.

Digging my fingers into her hips, I hold her against me. She pulls back breaking the kiss, but one look into her desire-filled eyes has me crashing my mouth onto hers again.

She breaks the kiss for a second time and pats my chest. “Easy boy.”

Obviously, the woman has no idea the effect she has on the opposite sex.

“I’m trying to be on my best behavior, but you’re making that really hard.”
