"He is dead, he fought the yellow hair, and died bravely."

"I am sorry. So very sorry." Snow Bird shook her head and shed a tear for him.

Her sister had a pain and Snow Bird tried to help her, by holding her hand. But when the pain was gone, she scorned her, "Go now, go back to your white people."

"Would you go with us, once we help you get well?"

"No! I will never live with the whites. Never! And I will not get well. I want to join Too Tall now. I want to die."

"No dear sister, you must live?"

"Go…. I do not want to look at you any longer."

"But we've travels so long to find you."

"Then you have come for no reason."

"I cannot leave you like this!" Snow Bird cried.

"Get out of my site, you are no longer Cheyenne."

Snow Bird stared at her. "Too Tall is dead, Naomi is gone, why would you stay here? Where will you go? Where will you live?"

Her sister stared, a tear running down her cheek, "Far away from you. You shame me. Go," she snarled her nose, "To your white husband." The way she said those words, as though they were dirty.

Snow Bird felt a tear run down her cheek. "I love you Little Bird."

"You have forgotten your people. Leave me!"

Snow Bird backed out of the tent and Matt wa

s standing not far from her. "Is everything alright?"

Snow Bird turned to look at him, "She shunned me. She will not go with us. Too Tall is dead, Naomi is with the fort people, and she would rather rot here than go with me and you. It is as I feared. There is no future for her here. But her hate is so strong, she cannot live with the whites."

Tears fell down Snow Bird's cheek.

Everyone bowed their heads.

"The trip was for nothing." Snow Bird shook her head and cried.

Matt took her into his arms and shook his head, "No, it wasn't for nothing. It has put closure on your life. This life, it is not your any longer. Your people are gone, what is left is the ghosts. I wish she would change her mind, for your sake, but we cannot make her."

"She hates me!"

"War is hard on everyone, Snow Bird. It makes people bitter sometimes. But you have a good life to go back to. And now I think it's time to go."

"She has no idea how much I still love her." Snow Bird cried. "She wants to join Too Tall."

Matt stared at Snow Bird, "She really did love him, just like you said."

"Yes, and in a way, I understand her wanting to join him." She looked into Matt's face, "For if anything happened to you, I would feel the same."

He stared into her tear-stained eyes. "I know. That's why I want to live to be an old man."

She finally cracked a smile.

"I suppose we could make camp around here and leave tomorrow. I am sorry I have dragged you all up here, for nothing."
