Deer Runner came with Flying Duck's wife, Blue Moon.
Lone Wolf came up to her, "Tell the elders why he has beat you."
She looked down, unable to look at her husband. "He was a good husband until the treaty was signed, when there were no more wars, he took his anger out on me. He beats me every day."
"She lies." Flying Duck shouted.
Blue Moon pulled her dress down low enough to show them the scars. The elders gasped.
"You are guilty of beating your wife."
"I will not live under this law… " Flying Duck announced. "Gray Eye would not find me guilty."
"Then you will leave and not come back, and you will not take your wife with you. It is decided." The oldest elder said to him.
"She's my wife!"
"Not if you leave she isn't."
"I will not stand for this."
"Get your belongings together and leave us then." Lone Wolf came to stand just in front of him. "For no wife will be beaten in our tribe."
"This is because of that white woman, isn't it?"
"No, it is because you have mistreated the one that waits on you each day. You were to love her and take care of her, instead you have hurt her and ignored her. For this you will leave our tribe and not come back. The council has spoken."
"You all say the same?" Flying Duck looked at the elders of the tribe and they nodded.
"Then I spit on you," he told them.
Lone Wolf followed him to see that he took only what was his and left his wife. He looked at her and she looked down.
"You'll be sorry for this, I promise you."
"Go now and speak no more." Lone Wolf told him.
He left, but Lone Wolf feared he'd return and cause trouble, later.
He looked at Blue Moon, "You are a free woman now."
"Free?"
"Yes, you may choose another husband, if you wish."
Blue Moon smiled, "Thank you, great chief, you are wise beyond compare. But I fear Flying Duck will come back and hurt him, if I take another."
He turned to his people, "We have new laws now. The elders of the tribe will be our council. They will vote on laws for our tribe and be fair to all. If Flying Duck comes back, he will face the law of the council. And for doing such a thing, it will be bad for him."
Everyone smiled and murmured what a great chief Lone Wolf was going to make.
Chapter Twenty
The one-person Hannah never expected to visit her was Luki. She came to stare upon her wounds, even she was affected by the site of them. She turned away from her for a moment, as though regrouping her thoughts.
"Your white husband did this?" she shrieked.
"Yes," Hannah sighed." Did you come to gawk at me, Luki?"
