“You are not funny.”

“So this call is not to say you finally found someone and you’re getting married.”

“No, I was distracted because of work. Nothing more,” I lie.

I stare at the open computer on my desk, the algorithms that need my attention. I just can’t seem to focus lately.

Summer chuckles, and it pulls me back. “Something funny?”

“Nothing funny at all.” Her voice takes on a serious tone. “What’s up?” she asks, and I can hear Jules squealing in the background.

“How’s Jules?”

“Good. Granddad is showing her a rope trick. Remember the one where he threads it through his fingers and you put your arm through a couple times?”

I laugh softly. “I remember,” I say. He used to do that with me when I was sad, missing my dad. “Can I speak to him?”

“Hang on.” From the muffled sounds on the other end, I suspect she’s put her hand over the phone. “Ah, he said he’s busy with Jules right now and asked if he can call you back later.”

“What is going on with him?” I frown and rub the center of my forehead. “I’ve been trying to reach him for days.”

“What about?” Summer asks.

“I just... I guess I wanted to know more about Khloe.”

“Khloe?”

“The woman he hired to assist me on this trip.”

“Is it not working out?”

I lower my voice. “She can’t even cook, plus she broke the vacuum and numerous dishes.”

Summer laughs. “Meaning she’s making your life chaotic. I like her already.”

“Not funny.” I eye the door to make sure she’s not within earshot. “I’m not sure how Granddad thought she was good for the job.”

“Are you disappointed in his choice?”

“No.”

Shit, that one word jumped to my lips rather quickly. And I’m sure I hear Summer chuckling again.

“Well then, what’s the problem?”

“You know I like things done a certain way.”

“Oh, I know, Will. Believe me, I know.”

“There’s a reason for that, Summer.” I sit back in my chair and watch a yellow bird perch on the shrubbery outside. The sky is a perfect blue, the sun shining brightly, and for some reason it takes me back to a time when I used to enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy life.

“I know that, too. Look, why don’t you try to enjoy yourself while you’re there. This Khloe sounds like a breath of fresh air. Take her out, show her around. She’s probably breaking things because you’re an ogre and she’s intimidated. I know how you are.”

“Believe me, she’s not one bit intimidated by me,” I say quickly.

“Oh? I thought all your assistants were afraid of you.”

“Not this one.”
