I do. I wish I didn’t.

He must sense my hesitation and discomfort because finally he says, “I’ll be at that bar across the street.”

“Are you sure?”

He nods. “Yeah. I mean, now that I know you’re an Omega I don’t think I could ever perceive you as a Beta again but,” he leans in and sniffs, “the scent blocker and heat suppressants seem to be doing their job.”

It’s his turn to look uncomfortable.

“You’re going to hover outside the restaurant, aren’t you?”

He grimaces. “Maybe?”

I laugh.

“Come in and get me in an hour?”

“You got it.”

“Miles?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks. I really need this.”

I flash him one last smile before stepping out of the sedan.

Caroline waits at the table in the back of the restaurant, two plates of peanut tofu triangles already served. “My favorite,” I groan, falling into my seat. I pluck one of the savory appetizers up and toss it in my mouth before I can think about it.

“And hello to you too.” Caroline snorts. “Are you here to visit with me or the food?”

“It’s a toss-up,” I say, but I slow down my eating. “The last twenty-four hours have been crazy, and I just want a little comfort food.”

Caroline smells gossip immediately, and I feel a twinge of guilt over not having been totally honest with her. “Tell me everything,” she begs, leaning forward with wide eyes.

“Just promise you won’t hate me.”

At this, her brows wrinkle and she reaches across the table to give my hand a squeeze. “What is it, babe?”

“I’m not exactly who you think I am. Well, I mean Iam,but also…”

I lower my voice. “I’m not a Beta, Care.”

Instead of removing her hand from mine, she squeezes tighter and offers me a tiny smile. “I know.”

“What?”

“We worked together for like two years, Rile. Of course I know. I’m just glad you’ve finally told someone. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have no one I could be honest with.”

Raw emotion pushes the air from my lungs and makes them contract tightly. Makes my eyes burn.

She knew.

Of course she knew.

I feel like a fool for ever thinking I couldn’t trust her even if that wasn’t the only reason I didn’t share the truth. I also didn’t want to put that on her. Didn’t want her to worry. To have to lie for me.

“Now, tell me everything. What happened?”
