I need him to take away the hurt. The sting of Thane’s rejection.

Fox searches my face and nods, pressing a kiss to my forehead before gently lowering me to lie flat against the mattress and rolling on top of me, using his strong biceps to hold himself at a hover, careful not to crush me.

“I’ll take care of you, baby,” he says, and then he slides into me, tenderly this time. The frantic coupling we had earlier has completely subsided, and Fox moves in me with long, languorous thrusts. Each one is meant to both tease and comfort. He murmurs words of praise into my ears until thoughts of Thane and everything else awful in this world disappear. Eventually, his moves begin to stutter, his rhythm off and I feel the start of a swell at his base.

My stomach flips.

“I’m gonna knot you now, okay?”

“Yes,” I cry out, squeezing my eyes shut.

He nips at my shoulder just as he plunges into me one more time, forcing his knot inside, groaning with his release. I stretch to fit him, all the air rushing from my lungs as I clutch at him, my fingernails digging in deep as stars shoot across my eyes and my head spins, drugged with pleasure. His knot swells to its fullest and he gasps as he pours into me, both of us locked together.

I whimper, overcome with the sensation as waves of pleasure flow through me. It’s nothing like any of the sex toys I’ve used to get through heats. It’s the most incredible thing I’ve ever felt. The perfect pressure, and it fills some strange need inside me, some instinct that I never knew was so strong. I want to scream and cry and beg for more all at the same time, all while being satisfied in Fox’s arms.

“Are you all right?” he whispers into my ear, smoothing back sweaty strands of hair from my forehead.

“More than all right. Perfect. Just perfect.” He holds me like that for the next few minutes until his knot begins to deflate. I miss it instantly, but I need time to process this.

“You were amazing, Riley. Ignore Thane. This was about you and me, okay? And you and me, we’re golden, baby.” He kisses along my jawline, each kiss becoming sillier and more dramatic until I’m laughing again at his antics. “There’s my girl. I love your laugh.”

“Really?”

“Really. I wish I could make you laugh all the time.”

“All the time?” I say, raising an eyebrow.

He pulls away from my jaw and crosses his eyes at me. “Well, maybe notallthe time. I’ll settle for a smile when you’re not laughing.”

He gently smacks the side of my ass and then sits up as I giggle. “Come on, let’s go shower. A little bird told me that showering with you is a great time.”

Laughing, I follow him into the bathroom, thoughts of Thane’s erratic behavior disappearing from my mind.

Thane’s angerhits me through the bonds like a shot of whiskey, along with a swirl of sadness and confusion. Normally, I’d leave him alone to deal with his emotions. Thane doesn’t like to talk about anything so low as feelings. But this time, his emotions are underscored with stark loneliness. And with what I can feel from Fox through his bonds, Thane might be feeling a little left out, too.

I put down my textbook and head toward the kitchen, because where else would Thane be? I find him at the counter, angrily chopping up a white onion and throwing it into a steaming pot.

“What did that onion ever do to you?” I ask, and he jumps, nearly dropping the blade. “Sorry, can I help with supper?”

Thane hands me another peeled onion, along with a chopping knife and cutting board. I wash my hands at the kitchen sink and start in on the vegetables. “What are we making tonight?”

“French onion soup,” he says quietly, his knife gliding through the onion in sharp straight rows. I frown down at my own slices, which are neat, but not all in the same size. Oh, well. It’ll still taste the same, even if it isn’t very pretty.

“You seem confused,” I say quietly, sliding the first pieces of onion into the pot. “And somewhat annoyed. Is it with Fox, because he’s with Riley?”

Thane sighs, dumping a handful of onion into the pot. “No, I’m not annoyed with Fox. He deserves to have happiness, and as you can tell from the bonds, he is certainly having that right now.” He flashes me a guilty look. “I went into Riley’s room, too. I… joined in a little.”

I stop chopping, whirling my head to him. “You were with Riley too?”

His cheekbones redden. “I couldn’t help myself, Levi. Even with taking the rut blockers, even with that strange undertone to her scent, I wanted her. I still want her.”

I pause, thinking before I speak. This needs to be handled carefully. Thane is practically a spooked stallion in this situation. “There’s nothing wrong with that, Thane. It’s a natural reaction. And she is a beautiful Omega. A beautiful person, too.”
