Dinner was amazing. I am pretty sure though that he didn’t cook it himself! But I don’t care. It is the thought that counts. When we get up from the table, I tell him that I will clear the table and wash the dishes. About that time, the doorbell rings. I finish clearing the table as he heads to the door.

I hear him tell Jake, his best friend, hey and to come on in.

“She’s in the kitchen,” I heard Wayne say and then I heard footsteps that I am pretty sure was going further away from the kitchen. Seems like whatever they were talking about, they didn’t want me to hear it.

As I finished the dishes, I got really curious and stepped out of the kitchen to walk a little closer to the living room, so I could hear what they were saying.

“Have you gotten any information out of her yet about getting in the Clark Estate? We need to see if that collection is really what it says on the internet?” Jake asked Wayne.

“No, I haven’t. I can’t just rush this. We don’t need her to get suspicious,” Wayne said.

“I know, but you can’t keep not bringing it up. We need to get moving,” Jake said.

I heard them start to walk back towards the door, so I took off back to the kitchen. They walk into the kitchen and Wayne introduces me to Jake. He was tall, a few inches taller than Wayne, so I would guess about 6’2”, a rugged look, deep brown eyes, and brown hair.

“Well, it is good to finally meet you Emma,” Jake said. “Wayne has told me a lot about you, but he didn’t do justice to your beauty!”

“Thank you. It is nice to finally meet you too Jake,” I say to Jake and then turn to Wayne and say, “I will leave you two guys alone and head home now. Thank you so much for a beautiful dinner.”

“Let me walk you to the door,” Wayne said.

When we got to the door he said, “Sorry Jake interrupted our night. I will make it up to you.”

I said, “It’s okay.”

He opened the door, we kissed goodbye, and I went to my car.

All night I tossed and turned. Something about Jake’s and Wayne’s conversation was definitely not good. I just couldn’t figure out what they were talking about.

What collection does Grayson have that they want to see and why? Should I call the police about what I heard? I mean it could be nothing. Maybe I should mention it to Ava. Maybe at least get her professional opinion on if it is something to call the police on or if I am just looking for a reason unconsciously, to stop seeing him. But the mention of Grayson’s estate and a collection that he has, has me really suspicious and concerned that if I say nothing I could live to regret it, causing me to lose my job if anything happens. Worse than that, I could lose my new family.

CHAPTERFIVE

Emma

I get up to get ready for work, exhausted. I haven’t slept worrying and trying to figure out last night. When I get to work, I am still trying to decide what to do about what I overheard Wayne and Jake talking about last night.

“Emma dear, are you okay,” Dottie asked. “Emma, earth to Emma.”

“Oh, sorry, Dottie. I was just deep in thought,” I replied.

“Do you need to talk about something? Is it Wayne? Everything okay with you two?” Dottie asked.

“We had dinner last night. He pulled out all the stops. It was amazing. First time I had been to his house. But his best friend, Jake, showed up and I left. I was just hoping for a little more, I guess,” I replied not wanting to tell her what I heard. If I say anything, it will be to Ava and Seals and Bounty. I just don’t want to say anything if it is nothing, but what if it is?

“Sounds like you had a nice time. Were you thinking of taking the relationship to the next step?” Dottie asked.

“I was. I mean you know a little about my past relationship and the abuse I went through. I have been on guard for so long and not wanting to let anyone in. I am still not one hundred percent that I am ready to let Wayne any closer to me. I felt somewhat relieved when Jake showed up,” I replied.

“Dear, it sounds to me like you are not ready. Don’t let anyone or anything push you into something you are not ready for, even your own hormones,” Dottie said.

“I know. You are right. And I am having doubts about him and us,” I said.

“Then definitely don’t go any further until you are sure and have no more doubts,” Dottie said. “And if you ever need to talk about anything, you know I am here for you.”

“Thank you for listening and the advice. And I know you are here for me,” I replied,

“Always my dear. You are family and you know Ava and Grayson are here for you as well,” Dottie said.
