“We were never talking about coffee. We’re talking about murder. And a chainsaw no one saw go up the elevator or back down.”

“It had to be in the building.”

“Exactly, but we can’t find it, which must mean it’s hiding inside the apartment of someone else in the building.”

“What about the roof? Or maybe it was taken apart? It could be in pieces.”

“I’m sure they checked the roof,” I say, “but I should ask.” I snatch my phone and shoot off a message to Rollins:Did we check the roof?before I refocus on Jay. “Stars for it being taken apart in pieces. If it was in pieces on its way up, how hard would it be to put it back together?”

“Not hard for someone who knows the equipment.”

My brows dip and I say, “The good hides the bad.” I sip my coffee and eye Jay again. “I’m not a chainsaw kind of girl. Would a chainsaw fit in a suitcase?”

“Of course, it would. A big one, but it would fit. They make custom cases, even.”

“I want to know how you know this. Later.” I dial Detective Rollins.

He answers on the first ring. “Yes, we checked the roof. And I have the press and Chief Houston breathing down my throat. What are we doing on that?”

“We’ll talk over pizza. Right now, have someone look for a large suitcase that came in or out of the building. We’re all so shell-shocked over the chainsaw, we aren’t thinking logically. Of course, he didn’t carry it in his hand. He put it in something.”

“I’ll get the team on it. Then I’m headed to the pizza joint.”

“I like feta, green olives, peppers with pepperoni.”

“You can order your own pizza,” he grumbles and hangs up.

I eye my text messages. There is nothing from Murphy.

I don’t think Landry is the only person hiding from me. And yet, Murphy did text me about my father’s attack. For just a moment I have this crazy thought. What if Miguel was working with Murphy? It’s so silly, I actually should laugh.

But I don’t.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Murphy is not working with Miguel.

Unless Miguel is working with Pocher, and Murphy was always a part of the Society. The very idea blows my mind. So does Kit blowing up Jay’s phone. There is just a lot of blowing up everything right now, which is counterproductive to me focusing on my case. I’ve drunk all of half my coffee and Kit has called Jay five times. At the end of the fifth call, he appears at our table, holding his phone.

Apparently, he’s freaked out at the idea that I might die and Kane will then blame him. I ignore his glower and wave him off to the coffee bar. “Might I suggest decaf? As it is, you come off like an angry stalker.”

He scowls and walks to the counter. I’m guessing he’ll order caffeine just to spite me, and with his attitude juiced up, I might have to send him back to Kane. There would be a fight, of course, but I would win. I’m not a good loser. I’m not sure Kit really appreciates that part of me as well as he should. So should the freak in the mask.

Hopefully, he finds out before Kit, though a two-for-one is always a plus.

I sip my coffee and dial Murphy again. It goes to voicemail yet again. I suppose he’s the boss and can ignore me at will and if that were the case, I’d just call him a bitch, too. The world is full of male bitches. Ask any woman. She’ll tell you. But I can’t shake the fact that this feels different with Murphy. I eye the time on my phone and decide it’s a problem that can wait. Though, a contact in Europe really cannot. Not after last night’s gruesome murder. I need to know what Landry’s hiding and no one runs without something to hide.

My mind flashes to my nightmare. To the bloody ocean and my jaw clenches. I have no idea why I’m still thinking about anything to do with the damn thing. I figured out what it means. Didn’t I?

Cutting my gaze from my two goons, I glance at the time that tells me it’s time to head over to the pizza joint. I start packing up and Kit stands. “I’m going to clear the doorway.”

“Look for a guy in aScreammask.”

His brows dip. “What?”

“Oh, shit,” Jay murmurs. “Do we think that guy is stalking you? And why didn’t you tell me? We were in the subway, Lilah. Did you not see the trailer for the newScream? He comes at this group of girls on a bus and kills one of them.”

“Who is the guy in the mask?” Kit demands.
