"And if and when you do? You feeling better prepared for it this time? To fight for those women and to look at them and honor who they were?"

Cami really liked the way Jacenta put things. It made her feel as if she was a warrior woman heading into battle when she viewed the bodies, rather than being a scared, rookie, co-opted member of the FBI who suffered crippling fear and nausea when faced with a corpse because of the thoughts of her sister.

"I like that. I think that will give me a much better mindset to deal with things," she admitted.

"This is a fight. Make no mistake. You're fighting to get answers, and oftentimes, the bad guys are fighting back just as hard to stay out of jail, avoid arrest, or keep under the radar. So, you don't shy away from finding those clues," she warned.

"I won't," Cami promised.

"Anything else you want to share?"

There was something she couldn't share, could never share. She glanced down to her laptop bag.

"I'm okay otherwise."

"You sure?" Clearly, Jacenta had picked up the indecision in her tone.

"Yes, I'm sure," Cami said hurriedly.

"I know that you have issues, Cami. That's the reason that we're even talking right now. Because you had issues with the FBI that you didn't feel were resolved. You went about addressing them in a way that got you into trouble."

"Yes, I did."

Now, guilt was filling Cami. She wondered if Jacenta had researched her past. Did she already know about Jenna? Something in her voice was cluing Cami that she might do.

If she knew about Jenna, it was one thing. But if she knew what Cami had done, and that she'd accessed that file, and that she'd then taken things much, much further—she was going to be in a whole heap of trouble.

"You don't try and take justice into your own hands any longer," Jacenta said firmly, causing a thrill of fear to clench at Cami's gut.

"I won't. I promise. But is it . . . is it wrong to try and find out information?" she asked.

“Why are you asking that? Have you done something you shouldn’t?”

Cami felt guilt twist inside her. She should never have asked that question, because it had given Jacenta a lead.

“It’s theoretical,” she stammered, feeling her cheeks redden. “Just a theoretical question.”

Jacenta’s sigh told Cami that she didn’t believe that.

"Depends how you go about it. I'm just saying, if you have issues with the way things were handled in the past, don't try and fix them yourself. It's not going to work out for you if you do."

"I hear you," Cami said. Meanwhile, her mind was racing.

She knew that her actions could land her in deep trouble. Jacenta’s role was to make sure that Cami was rehabilitated after her earlier hacking crime, and her own recent actions had just proven she wasn’t.

Liam Treverton might have left the FBI, and in disgrace, too, but what if he still had friends there who were on his side? What if Jacenta was one of them? She was sure that allegiances could run deep in an organization like that. Working on one case might create bonds that persisted even after a person took the wrong path. She knew that she must not think that just because she was clever with IT that she was a step ahead. She'd already been caught once and could easily be again.

She would need to be very careful going forward. That was clear.

Liam, by now, would know his house had been broken into, and he'd know his front door had been hacked.

That already pointed all the fingers of suspicion in her direction, she realized. It would now depend on if he knew who she was or not.

"Well, then. You get some rest, and hopefully tomorrow brings some progress on the case."

"Thank you," Cami said. She thought Jacenta would cut the call immediately, but instead, her parole officer paused.

"Remember what I said. Don't go getting yourself into trouble again."
