"She's not an agent. No way is this woman an FBI agent. Show me your ID." Scott stared at her critically as Cami seethed inwardly.

"She's a specialist, co-opted for this case," Connor said.

"If she's not an agent, I'm not having her in this room."

"What?" Cami blurted out, feeling appalled by his cheek. How dare he question who the FBI wanted to bring along and start making his own rules up? “I’m part of the investigation team,” she insisted angrily.

Folding his arms, and giving her the smuggest sneer she'd seen in a long time, Scott shook his head slowly. But he didn't address her. Instead, he turned back to Connor, clearly being the type of man who dealt at director level only and didn't bother with addressing subordinates.

"You can't just waltz in here with people off the street, Agent. If this is a crime investigation, I'm only prepared to deal with licensed law enforcement."

"You have the right to do that," one of the two lawyers said, nodding in approval.

Now, the tables were turned. Cami felt shocked. She'd worked with Connor on four cases so far. Not once had she been asked to leave, or had anyone question her credentials.

Connor pressed his lips together, and Cami could see that he knew he was in for a tough ride. She guessed that it was a valid objection, or he would have countered it.

And, suddenly, Cami wondered if she might not be of more use outside of this meeting than inside of it. She had a feeling that getting any information from Scott and his legal retinue was going to be more difficult than getting blood from a stone.

"I'll leave," she said, turning to the door. "I'll wait somewhere outside, if that's okay?"

Nobody bothered to answer her question. The battle lines were being formed in the boardroom as Connor sat down on one side of the table, facing Scott and the lawyers, who had now repositioned themselves in a row on the opposite side.

Cami let herself out and closed the door.

Given time, she knew that she could probably hack the wifi, but she didn't know how much time she would have. This was her chance to find out more about the inner workings of the company. And perhaps, seeing that nobody had bothered to ask what kind of an expert she was, they might not have their guard up in that direction.

She returned to the reception room, and one of the guards turned to her immediately.

Sure enough, now that she wasn't with Connor, she felt a distinct easing of the atmosphere. On her own, Cami wasn't so much of a threat.

"Is there a room where I can sit and work?" she asked politely. "I'm not an FBI agent, just helping out on the case, so I wasn't allowed to join the meeting."

She was minimizing herself in their eyes, looking for the sympathy vote, and it worked.

"Yeah, sure," the guard said. "Go to the first office on the right."

"Great, I'll do that. And could I possibly borrow your wifi?" She asked the question casually, like she was a broke student. It didn't take too much playacting, she thought ruefully.

"Code's Global, backslash, followed by today's date. Six numbers, month, then day, then year."

"Thanks," Cami said.

"You're welcome," the guard replied, giving her one more not-unfriendly glance.

She had an office, and she had the wifi code. Scott might have banned her from the meeting, but that was even more reason to find out what he was being so defensive about.

It was time to go on the hunt.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Cami headed into the empty office, trying to look innocent, hoping that nobody from Global Security would look in and see her state-of-the-art, gaming laptop that she was now pulling out from the bag.

With this, the programs she had available, and the wifi code, Cami was sure that she could find an unguarded entrance into the company’s workings.

First prize would be to access Scott's emails and records. That would give her background on Global Security and might even help her find out if Scott himself had an alibi or not

She powered up her laptop, logged on to the wifi, and started her hacking programs.
