In fact, looking at it and thinking about timing gave Cami another idea, just the sketch of a possible theory, that also hinged on what Seth had said earlier.

But there was no time to explore this further, not when Connor was battling ranks of lawyers.

Knowing that she needed to tell Connor about this alibi as soon as possible rather than have him waste his time in the meeting room, Cami logged out and put her computer away. Then she headed down the corridor and tapped on the meeting room door again.

She could hear raised voices coming from inside. It sounded as if both the lawyers were shouting in unison.

"This is a murder case, gentlemen," Connor was insisting in a voice that told Cami he was running out of patience fast.

"You're not going to get information from us! Bring a warrant if you want to intrude on my client’s privacy!"

Cami tapped again, louder, and deciding that it would be quicker, opened the door and let herself in.

They all swiveled around to stare at her.

"Sorry to interrupt," she said. "I'd like a word with Agent Connor, please."

Connor got up and strode to the door. Cami stepped out and closed it behind him.

"I logged into the network," she whispered. "He acted unethically in getting new clients, but he's cleared as a suspect. I found evidence, bookings and photos that he was playing golf the whole of yesterday afternoon."

Connor stared at her with his angry expression dissolving. "Good work," he said. "That's saved us some time."

He glanced back at the door. "No need to tell them we're done. Let's just get the hell out of here and keep on looking. Do you have any new ideas? If the security alarm side didn't pan out, what's next?"

Cami stretched her legs to keep pace as Connor power walked out of the office.

"I do have an idea," she said, as they headed down the gray tiled path to the parking lot. "I think we need to look at the victims' social media accounts, and double check the timing of their upcoming trips and time away."

"Why's that?" Connor asked.

"I just figured something out when I was thinking about timing. I remembered something that Seth, the biker, told us."

""What's that?" Connor asked.

"Seth mentioned that he'd been looking at the Williams's house when the husband's car wasn't there, Tuesday before last, and he'd seen someone inside."

"That's correct," Connor said.

"But they were on vacation then. They were away. Both of them, according to the case notes. They said the house was empty. So, who could have been in there, moving around, with the lights on? Did they have someone helping them?" Cami asked. “Or did this killer know that they were going to be away? Because if he knew that they were going to be away for a few days, he would have had a lot of time to try and do something like hack into an alarm system.”

Connor stared at her, his eyes narrowed. "A very good question," he said.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The bear had shown him her claws. Mama Bear had hurt him bad. And now, the killer was angry and in pain, licking his wounds and planning his revenge. Somebody in the future would pay for this. Nobody cut him and got away with it.

"Who's been borrowingmyknife?"

That was how it had played out in there. What had happened last night had been impossible. His surprise had backfired on him in the most terrible way.

He'd been so filled with anticipation as she'd walked into the bedroom. He'd seen her eyes, wide and scared, as she took in the welcome scene he'd so carefully prepared. She'd screamed. That was to be expected.

But then, she'd taken a knife out of the purse she was carrying, and she'd lunged at him with it. Before he knew it, the blade had sliced across his left arm, opening up a painful gash, and he'd been the one to scream.

"No!"

He'd lashed out at her, but the knife had taken him again, this time stabbing into his side, causing him to flinch in pain.
