“I need you to be okay with this, Oak,” I whisper, my heart squeezing at the thought that he might not be able to get past it.

Reese has always been a thorn in mine and Oakley’s relationship, but never like this. But I have to stay true to myself and what I want. Even if it causes a rift between us.

“I… fuck, Sis. I don’t know what you want me to say.”

Getting up, I go to him and perch on the roll arm of the chair. “I’m sorry.” I reach for his hand.

“Yeah. I know. It’s just… going to take some time.”

“Promise me you won’t go too hard on Reese.”

“Fuck, Liv. You can’t ask that of me. It’s my prerogative as your brother to give your boyfriend shit.”

“Fine. Just promise not to hurt his face again. I kind of like it.” My lips twist with amusement, but Oakley looks less than impressed.

“Liv? Oak?” Dad calls. “Lunch is ready.”

“I can’t believe they’re staging an intervention,” I grumble.

When I’d gotten home earlier, Dad and Fiona requested that we all sit down and talk about things… together. Reese should be here soon, but I still haven’t heard from him.

“Dad is on your side,” Oak says as we stand.

“How do you know?”

“Because it’s Dad and you’re his favourite.”

“I am not his—”

Oakley pins me with a knowing smile. “You’re his daughter, Liv. All he wants is for you to be happy. Fiona, on the other hand… you might have a way to go persuading her that you and Reese are a good idea.”

“Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“Anytime, Sis. Any fucking time.” His laughter follows me out of the room. We make our way down the hall to the kitchen, where we find Dad and Fiona talking in hushed conversation.

“Is Reese here yet?” Fiona asks, her voice edged with disapproval.

“No, I haven’t—” Her mobile phone starts ringing and she frowns at the incoming call. “I need to take this.”

She slips out of the kitchen and Dad ushers us to sit down. “Did you both have a good talk?”

“I think so.” I glance at Oak and he smirks.

“I promised not to break Reese’s face again. It’s a start.” He shrugs, helping himself to a piece of bread.

I check my phone again, wondering what could possibly be taking Reese so long.

He said he would sort it.

He said he and Abigail had a plan to set them free.

God, what if Judge Bancroft refused? What if—

“Hello?” Reese calls out, and relief floods me.

I practically scramble out of my chair to go and meet him. Oakley mutters something under his breath and I give him the bird before slipping into the hall.

“What happened?” I ask, studying Reese’s expression for a clue. “Did he—”
