And then, I whisper against his lips, “No regrets.”

REESE

“Be quick,” Liv says as I kiss her shoulder and roll out of bed.

We haven’t ventured out of this room since we managed to get out of the family lunch Mum and Christian insisted on. We had no need to when all we wanted was each other. But as the hours have gone on, hunger has started to get the better of both of us. We decided against that date I’d promised Olivia—for now, at least—in favour of hanging out in bed together.

It’s late. Too late really to be sneaking down to the kitchen like a naughty child for midnight snacks, but fuck it.

My girl has officially exhausted me, and I need some fuel.

The lights in the hallway went out an hour or so ago, letting us know that Mum and Christian had gone to bed, and unsurprisingly Oak never reappeared to hang out with us.

Pulling on a pair of sweats, I slip into the bathroom to take a piss before heading downstairs on my mission.

I promised my girl something decent to snack on, and I fully intend to deliver.

The house is in darkness as I make my way to the kitchen. If I were in our old house, I’d be able to do this in the dark. I knew that place like the back of my hand. Knew where to find everything, which floorboards creaked and which windows were the easiest to break out of.

I might have spent almost as much time here as I did at home, but I never learned it quite the same. Instead, I relied on Oak to worry about escape plans, food and alcohol runs.

The second I step over the threshold, I slide my hand up the wall to find the light switch. My eyes burn with the brightness, but that’s soon forgotten when a figure nursing a glass of whisky at the breakfast bar makes my stomach jump into my throat.

“What the fuck are you doing?” I bark, glaring at Mum while my heart thrashes wildly in my chest.

“Can’t sleep.”

“So you thought you’d sit there in the dark, waiting to scare the shit out of someone?”

“Language, Son,” she chastises. Honestly, I don’t know why she bothers. She’s been trying since I was about thirteen so far and it’s made very little difference to the words that come out of my mouth.

Ignoring her, I march forward, more than happy to grab what I need and leave her to it.

“Would you like a drink?” she offers, making me pause halfway across the room.

“Do I want a drink, or do I want to sit and drink with you?”

Hurt flicks across her face, but she locks it down fast. “With me. I think it’s time we talked, don’t you?”

Flashbacks of finding her with Christian all those months ago and then Dad with Krystal recently fill my mind and anger swirls in my belly.

Talking about it is the last thing I want, especially while my girl is upstairs in her bed, naked and waiting for me.

My lips part to say no, but then she gives me a look that makes me feel like a little boy and I find myself moving toward her and taking a seat.

She grabs another tumbler off the tray beside her and pours me a generous helping of whisky as if she knows I’m going to need it to hear what she wants to say to me.

I’m not sure if I’m relieved or downright terrified of what I’m about to be forced to listen to.

“I’m sorry, Reese,” she says, pushing the glass over. “You were never meant to find out everything you did… the way you did.”

“You mean, I was never meant to walk in on both my parents fucking other people? Right, I’ll remember that.”

“Reese, please,” she sighs.

“No, don’t try to placate me. You both fucked up here, Mum.”
