Ileave my phone off for the rest of the day. It burns a hole in my pocket, daring me to look and see if Reese has texted again. But seeing Darcie’s smug smile everywhere I turn is enough to stop me from switching it back on.

“Liv,” Oak’s voice rises above the hallway chatter. “Don’t you dare run,” he barks as I double around and head in the opposite direction. “Olivia, I swear to God, will you just wait?”

He intercepts me, grabbing my elbow and steering me out of the stream of bodies.

“You’re avoiding me.”

“Actually, I’m avoiding all of you. Problem with that?”

“Come on, Liv. That isn’t fair and you know it.”

“Whatever, Oak.” I refuse to look at him.

“Is this about Reese? About last night? Because I swear to—”

“Reese?” I spit his name. “What the hell would he have to do with anything?” My eyes narrow, and Oakley runs a hand through his hair.

“So it’s not about Reese?”

This is it, my chance to tell him. To come clean and admit what’s been going on. But what if I fess up and Reese denies it?

I’m not sure I’ll survive that, so I swallow the confession.

“Did you hit your head in practice?”

“But I thought—”

“Whatever you thought, you’re wrong, Oak. Me and Reese are… trying to get along, for Dad and Fiona’s sake.”

He studies me, searching my face for a sign I’m lying. But he won’t find it. My poker face game is strong, and the second relief flits across his expression, I know I’ve won this round.

I just don’t expect him to deliver his next blow.

“Thank fuck. Because he was all over Darcie last night. Practically fucked her right there in front of me and Misty.”

His words are like daggers, plunging into my back. He watches me still, waiting for my reaction. But I shove it down, refusing to take the bait.

“How nice for him,” I say coolly. But no more coolly than usual where Reese is concerned.

“Is that all you wanted to tell me, because I need to go.”

“You’ll be at the game later, right?”

“Actually, I won’t. I have a thing.”

“A thing?” His expression darkens. “What the fuck, Liv? I need you there. I need—”

“I’m sure you’ll manage without me.”

I had planned to go to the game, to cheer on the Saints, but I’m not feeling very sisterly where Oak is concerned right now.

“You’re really not coming?”

“No, I have plans with Charli.”

“But—”
