“I swear to fucking God, Whitfield.” Anger coats my brother’s every word. “If you don’t start talking, then I’m going to assume she was the one who mauled your back and fucking end you for this.”

I inhale a sharp breath, waiting for Reese’s reply.

Part of me knows it’ll be bad, really bad if he admits it, but part of me wants him to claim me. To say fuck you to the Heirs and tradition and responsibility… and choose me.

“Assume what you like, Beckworth. It’s none of your fucking business.”

“You smug fucker.”

“Okay, knock it off,” Elliot says, and I peek around the corner to find him standing between my brother and Reese. “This is not the time or place. We have a win to celebrate.”

“Like I’m going to celebrate anything with this sneaky fucker. He’s fucking Liv, I know he is.”

Reese’s expression gives nothing away. He isn’t admitting it, but he isn’t denying it either. And I don’t know how to feel about that.

“So what if I am? She could do a hell of a lot worse.”

The laugh that bubbles out of Oak isn’t normal. Bitter and strangled, it’s full of disgust and distrust.

“Got something to say, Beckworth?”

“Yeah, I’ve got something to say. You’re not good enough for her, you fucking piece of shit.”

“Oak,” Theo warns.

“He left,” my brother spits. “When things didn’t go his way, he fucking left us. We can’t trust him. He’s a snake. And doesn’t deserve someone like Olivia. He’ll never deserve her. She’s good, she’s the best of us, and he’s dead inside. He doesn’t have a fucking heart.”

Reese releases a maniacal laugh that sends a shudder through me. “You’re so fucking full of yourself. Thinking the sun shines out of Olivia’s arse when really, she’s no better than the rest of us.”

Blood roars in my ears as I stand here, frozen to the spot.

“What the hell does that mean?”

“It means, she’s not the girl you think she is. Not when she gets on her knees and begs so—”

Crack.

The sound of Oak punching Reese reverberates through me, but it’s his words that cut me to the bone.

“I’ll kill you,” my brother yells. “I’ll fucking kill you for touching her.”

“You’ll have to catch me first,” Reese taunts, inching backward while Elliot and Theo hold Oak firmly.

“Maybe you should walk away, Whitfield. Let him cool off.”

“Cool off? I don’t need to fucking cool off, I need him gone. You should have stayed gone. We were fine without you. Olivia was fine without you.”

“You want me gone, Beckworth?” Reese’s voice is icy cold.

“Damn right I do.”

“Consider it done.” Spinning on his heel, Reese takes off in the opposite direction of the Chapel.

“Fuck.Fuck!” Oak roars, kicking the ground.

“Relax,” Elliot commands. “Everyone needs to take a fucking minute and cool off.

But I know he’s wrong. I saw the defeat in Reese’s eyes, the dejection. He believed every word Oakley spat at him.
