A dark glint lights up his eyes, his mouth twisting with smug arrogance. “God, you made it so easy.”
“W-what?”
“Olivia?” someone calls across the car park.
“Abigail?” I blink away the raindrops clinging to my lashes.
Reese murmurs something under his breath before yanking out of my hold.
“N-no,” I reach for him again, but he pushes me away, climbing inside his car. “Reese, don’t do this, please.”
The cold haunted look he gives me makes my chest crack, and I feel like I can’t breathe.
“Reese, please.” I slam my fists against the glass, but the car roars to life as he stares at me like he doesn’t even know me.
The car lurches forward and takes off, leaving me in a puddle of tears and rain.
“Olivia?” Abigail reaches me, wrapping her arm around me. “What happened?”
“I-I don’t know.” I stare after Reese’s car, but it’s already gone, swallowed by the sheet of rain.
“Come on, let’s get you somewhere warm.” She leads me toward the imposing Chaucer Building.
“Isn’t it locked?”
“Don’t worry.” She gives me a small smile. “I have a key.”
She does?
Abigail lets go of me to dig a small key out of her pocket. She slips it into the lock and the door clicks open.
The strip lights flicker to life as we enter the long corridor. The overpowering smell of chlorine fills my lungs.
“I haven’t been out here for years.” When we had mandatory swimming lessons in year seven.
“My dad and Mr. Porter have an arrangement. In return, I’m allowed after-hours access to the pool.”
“Huh.”
Little Abigail Bancroft sure is full of surprises.
“I take it you swim.”
She nods, her eyes darting away from me. “But I… I can’t swim in front of people.”
“Because of your scars?”
Another nod.
“You shouldn’t be ashamed of them.”
“Easy for you to say,” she murmurs, leading to the end of the corridor and into a room I’ve never been in before.
“What is this place?”
“You’ll see.” She hits an illuminated switch on the wall, and the pool lights up beyond the glass windows lining one side of the office.
“Pretty.”
