“No, it isn’t.”

“What will you do about Reese?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you want to do?”

I want to go after him, to make him admit what I know in my heart to be true. But he’s still hiding things from me. And until I know what, I don’t see how we can move forward.

“You should go after him.”

“W-what?”

“If you care about him, you should go after him.”

“You’re right,” I say, a sense of resolve washing over me. He doesn’t get to run from this—to run from me.

Olivia: We need to talk.

A minute passes and he doesn’t reply.

Olivia: Reese, please…

Nothing.

A sinking feeling spreads through me, but I refuse to be deterred. Hitting call, I wait for it to connect, but it sends me straight to voicemail.

“Damn you, Reese,” I murmur.

“Maybe he needs to cool off.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

But as I say the words, the knot in my stomach tightens.

And I can’t shake the feeling that something bad is about to happen.

REESE

The rain pounds down on the windscreen as I press my foot harder on the accelerator, my need to get away from this town too much to deny.

A bolt of lightning illuminates the sky a second before a crack of thunder makes my car shudder.

Oak’s words reverberate through me, sinking their claws into the insecurities I try my best to hide from the world.

But that’s the thing about someone who’s known you their whole life, who knows you better than you know yourself. They know exactly where to strike when they really want to hurt you the most.

I can’t even claim that the words he spat at me were lies.

They weren’t.

I’m not good enough.
