Stepping back into the small space, I hold the tray of coffees out toward her. “I got double shots.”

“Good call,” she mutters.

She plucks the cup from the tray before her eyes find me again, studying me.

I lower my arse to the towel I slept on last night and throw the bag of pastries between us as something of a peace offering.

“I’m waiting,” Olivia mutters.

“Waiting for what?” I ask innocently, although I know exactly what she means.

I take a sip of my coffee, my need for caffeine getting the better of me despite knowing it’s going to be too hot.

“Ow, fuck. Shit,” I hiss when the boiling liquid burns my tongue.

Olivia watches me with her brow quirked and a smirk on her lips. “Some might say that’s karma.”

“I don’t care about what anyone thinks but you,” I confess.

“Oh, so you actually want to hear me out now?”

“Uh… well,” I rub the back of my neck awkwardly. I don’t do this. I don’t have heart-to-hearts with anyone. Especially not girls. And especially not my best friend’s sister.

Fucking hell, Oakley is going to fucking castrate me when he finally gets his hands on me again.

“Yeah, I guess I do.”

Her expression hardens, and a frown crinkles my brow.

“Well, that’s tough, because I’m not the one who needs to do the talking. You’re the one with the explaining to do, Whitfield.”

“Oh, you're surnaming me now, huh?” I mutter, desperately needing to lighten the mood.

“Don’t try to be cute. You—”

“You think I’m cute?” I ask, unable to fight my smile.

“No, I don’t. Not in the slightest. Now start talking.”

My mouth opens and closes a few times, but no words come.

“Start with what happened before the summer. Why did you suddenly turn on me, Reese?” Pain and confusion war in her eyes, and it makes the anger I felt back then—hell, the anger I felt last night when déjà vu smacked me upside the head—surge through me.

My blood runs red hot through my veins and I squeeze my eyes closed at the image that’s been imprinted in my brain since the night I discovered the truth.

Since the night she sent me into it and began the process of my entire life crumbling before my eyes.

“Take your time. We’ve got all weekend.”

My brows shoot up. “You want to spend the weekend with me?” I ask, shocked to my core.

She shrugs. “I guess that all depends on how the next hour goes, huh?”

My fists clench and unclench in my lap as I stare at her in disbelief.

“What do you think I did, Reese?” she urges when I don’t offer anything up.

“You knew. You knew about them, and you never told me,” I blurt, my voice rough with emotion and betrayal.
