Reese lets me go, and it feels symbolic.

I came here to fight for him, to show him that he’s not alone. But maybe it wasn’t enough.

Maybe I’m not enough.

After hiding in the bathroom longer than I should have, I find the courage to go back into the hotel room and face him.

“Should have grabbed a phone charger,” he says, waving his phone at me. “My battery died.”

“We can head back, if you want to.”

I’d stupidly thought we would stay and it would be this magical romantic weekend.

God, why did I let my heart run away with herself?

Reese had the perfect opportunity to tell me how he felt, and he didn’t.

And now everything feels so confused in my head. It’s possible this is nothing more than a game. That he wanted to use me to get back at my father and his mum. That I became collateral in a war that pitted us as enemies.

But I was never Reese’s enemy.

“Do you want to go back?” he asks, watching me with a closed-off expression.

I wish I knew what he was thinking.

“I think we both know this isn’t about what I want, Reese.”

“Come here.” He shuffles to the end of the bed and plants his feet on the floor.

“What—”

“I said, come here.” Reaching for my hand, he tugs me over to him, banding his arm around my waist. I gaze down at him. He’s so infuriatingly handsome, it isn’t fair. I can’t think straight when we’re this close. When he’s touching me, looking at me like I’m all his dreams come true.

“You’re upset with me.”

“I’m… it doesn’t matter.”

“I’m not good at this, Liv. I’m not good at letting people in.”

“I know.”

“But you came. You came for me.”

I nod, too overwhelmed to reply. He looks so lost.

“I don’t deserve—”

“Shh.” I press my finger to his lips. “Let’s not rehash things. We’ve both done and said things to hurt each other.”

“You’re so strong, Olivia.” His hand slides up my stomach, resting over my chest. My heart. “You’re one of the strongest people I know.”

“I have to be when I’m surrounded by Heirs.”

“Can I kiss you?”

My heart flutters at his simple request, and I nod again.
