But it’s more than Kane allowing it. It’s Alice. She’s lying on the bed now with her eyes open, fixed on the ceiling. She’s losing herself in the unknown, and she has no hope because she doesn’t know what’s going to happen to her, and I don’t have answers to give.

“I’m going for a slash,” I tell her, rubbing the back of my neck. “Then I’m going to see about breakfast.”

She says nothing. She doesn’t even acknowledge that I’ve spoken. I don’t know if it’s better or worse than her accusation that I’m torturing her. Of course, that only hurt because it was true. I was trying to bring her a small comfort, but in the end, it had done the opposite.

And maybe that was part of Kane’s plan.

My stomach churns hotly as I lean over the toilet and grip my dick. My piss smells a little too boozy, and I know Phoenix would be yelling at me right now about not drinking enough water. I look over at the rusted sink, and I feel like shit again because Alice deserves better.

She’d been neglected and unloved her entire life because her bastard of a father couldn’t extend even a little bit of grace to the child he’d created. He’d fucked our lives to hell and back, but we were nothing to him, so it only made sense. But his own daughter?

Digging my phone out of my pocket, I shoot a text to Ari, telling him he’s on guard duty. Kane’s orders are that she’s never to be left alone again, but I need a word with our fearless leader because I’ve goddamn had it.

Crossing the room, I drop my knee to the bed and lean over her, flashing the phone in her face. I watch as her eyes cross a little, then focus, and then narrow.

“It’s eight thirty-five in the morning on Thursday. You’ve been here eleven days now, darling.”

“Why are you telling me?” she asks.

I bite my lip, then glance at the door. Ari’s read my message, but he hasn’t replied, which means he’s annoyed and he’s going to take his sweet time. I fight the urge to brush a strand of hair from her forehead.

“Do you love your father, Alice?”

She blinks, then laughs. “What do you think?”

“I think that the human heart is fragile and desperate,” I tell her. “I think it’s the reason that we’re often so stupid.” I pause, then ask again, “Do you love him?”

“I don’t really know,” she admits. “But he doesn’t love me, so what the fuck does it matter?”

“Would you accept his love if he offered it?”

She laughs again, turning her face away. “If it was real?” She trails off with a sigh and shrugs. “Who cares since he never will? Trust me when I say that I know he doesn’t give a shit that I’m here. He might put a show on about trying to get me back, but if I die, it won’t affect him at all.”

I say nothing. I just meet her gaze with mine, holding her dark, beautiful eyes and watching all the emotions burn behind them like wildfire.

“Your master wants me dead.”

“I don’t think that’s the truth.” I huff a quiet laugh and shrug. “If he did, you’d already be in the ground, darling girl.” I sit back as she flops back down to her pillow. She looks a little stronger and more lucid since I forced her to keep down the bread Kane force-fed her, and I know she won’t be given the opportunity to pull a stunt like that again.

Before I can say anything else, I hear footsteps and a quiet whistle. Alice tenses, so I touch her hand briefly. “It’s only Ari.”

“The redhead?” she asks.

He nods. “I’m sure by now you’ve worked out he can’t speak.”

She looks slightly uncomfortable. “I didn’t want to ask, but yeah. I don’t, uh…I don’t really sign or anything.”

“He won’t care about that. Just don’t piss him off.”

Alice says nothing, but her gaze flickers to the door when it opens, and Ari steps in with a bag hanging off his arm. It looks like takeout, which isn’t ideal, but it’ll do for now.

‘Kane says to make her eat,’ Ari signs.

I stand up and lift my hand to reply, ‘Don’t hurt her.’

Ari grins widely. ‘You always ruin my fun.’

I don’t know that he’s telling the truth, though. He might want to give her a little pain, but the most exquisite pleasure would follow. I know my precious little psychopath a little better than he knows himself.
