Page 15 of Her Wild Ride

Rune runs her fingers lightly over both Bexley’s palms. “Awww, two matching lines. My dear, you also have equal strengths in both hands.”

I slant my look at Bexley. “She’s saying we’re destined to be together. Our palms show our love.”

BEXLEY

––––––––

MY CELL PHONE chimes. I glance down and see a text message from Billie. “I have to take this. Excuse me.”

I wait for Johnny to move, and I slip out of the seat. “I’m probably going to head home. Thanks for supper, Otto. It was nice seeing you, Rune.”

I don’t run outside, but I definitely don’t make eye contact with anyone else. The cool air smacks my face. It’s refreshing. Palm reading. Destiny. Equal parts of whatever. It’s all hogwash, just like the love spice.

I swipe my phone to read Billie’s message.

Sorry I took off. I needed to ride.

My fingers jam my screen harder than I intend.

Who are you with? Are you okay? Call me when you get a second.

I watch the bubbles as she types.

Okay, Mommy.I can hear the sarcasm in her voice.

“Who’s that?” Johnny leans over my shoulder. No boundaries at all.

“Your sister.” I don’t hide the messages. “She’s good.”

“Who’s she with?”

“She didn’t say.”

“Ask her.” Worry laces his tone.

I type in the question, and the bubbles pop up. They disappear and pop up again.

Redstone.

I’m not surprised. She’s been hitting on him for months. It’s Sawyer Redstone who pretends he’s not into her.

“What Redstone is she with?”

“Swayer.”

“Sawyer? Really? Isn’t he a little old for my sister?”

“Aren’t you too old for me?”

“Touché. Does this mean you believe Rune’s palm reading?”

I slide my phone in my sweater pocket. “No.” I walk away.

He falls in stride beside me. “I have my bike if you want a ride.”

“No thanks. I’ll walk.”
