Chapter Seven

JOHNNY

––––––––

IWANT TO kiss her.

I want to kiss her so fucking bad.

But I don’t dare.

One, she’s made it clear we’re not on the same page. Two ... two ... I can’t remember my second reason with her so damn close. My blood boils, and desire rushes through my veins.

“I’ll believe this gentlemanly side when I see it.” Her hand smacks my cheek a couple times. The light sting brings me back to the present.

“I’m being pretty damn gentlemanly right now,” I grumble.

“You’re pitching a tent against my stomach.”

I can’t deny it. I’m rock-hard below. She does this to me.

“I didn’t say you don’t turn me on, Bex. I said I can be gentlemanly.”

“If you think your dad would ever leave you alone in a trailer with me for the night, you’re sadly mistaken.”

Two, that’s my two. I’m going to have to drag my dad aside and have a conversation about my intentions. Whether I like it or not. Whether he likes it or not.

“If he’s what’s holding you back, I’ll have a conversation with him right now.”

She catches my arm as I turn. “I can’t, Johnny.” Seriousness waves over her face. A seriousness I don’t like. Hurt, fear, and mistrust make an appearance too. It’s not just my leaving conflicting her. She’s afraid of me. Why the hell is she afraid of me?

I feel my jaw tighten. My breathing slows.

“Whatever you’re looking for, I can’t give it to you. I’m sorry. Friends is my final decision.” She ducks under my arm and strolls away, leaving me feeling all sorts of emotions I don’t like.Whatever I’m looking for?I’m looking for her. I’m here for her.

I try to duck out after I help my dad blow up the mattresses. I’m not in the mood for a friendly barbecue with pretty much the rest of town as they kick off the haunted weekend. No amount of silly mummy pizza, finger hot dogs, and hamburgers blanketed in cheese slices cut into jack-o’-lanterns can turn my sour mood.
