“Well, I challenge them when they are unreasonable.”

Reece raised his brow again.

“Okay, I can be rather unreasonable too,” Jess admitted. “But this is beside the point. What I’m trying to say is that you shouldn’t feel insulted if I sometimes say no, and should take into consideration my opinion even when the obvious conclusion is that I will say yes.”

The light in his eyes changed. He understood her, but something else was on his mind.

Moving he walked over to his down coat, searched the right pocket, and returned to stand in front of her. Then he bent down on one knee, opened the small box in his hand, and looked at her.

“Will you marry me, Jessica Wright?” His deep voice trembled.

“Have I got any other option?” she whispered, miraculously managing to send words past her dry throat.

“You can always say no,” Reece suggested hoarsely.

Jess could see, gazing into his anxious dark eyes, how much it cost Reece to say those words. It was like admitting that not only had he learned a good lesson, but also that he cared for her deeply enough to try to amend his temper and make a serious effort to treat her with the respect due to a soul mate.

“Then in this case my answer is yes -but,” she smiled and quickly added, “doyouwant to marry me?”

Amusement and profound relief made his eyes shine. The tension clenching his body was eased out with a sigh. “Have I got any other option?” he teased.

“Nope.”

“Then in this case, my answer is yes.”

They laughed and Reece slipped a radiant-cut diamond onto her ring finger.

“When did you buy this?”

“Do you like it?”

“I do.” Jess looked at the diamond, then at him, expectantly. Reece seemed to be embarrassed, but after a brief pause he told her.

“I bought it the day after our wedding.”

“Why? I was already filing for divorce then.”

“I’d hoped you’d change your mind.”

Jess felt like a heel. He’d cared for her longer and far more than she would’ve ever guessed.

“I’m so sorry,” she said contritely, understanding what the admission had cost the pride of such a self-assured man, and what a slap in the face to his ego her request for the divorce had been. When he’d arranged for them to get married, he’d truly believed he was doing the right thing. He hadn’t tried to overpower her or limit her freedom like she thought.

“You won’t divorce me again?”

“I won’t.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Smiling, Reece took hold of her chin, tilted her head back, and brushed an insubstantial kiss on her lips.

“You can do better than that,” she breathed seductively, tracing the contours of his lips with the tip of her tongue, tantalizing him into action. In no time, she found herself possessively plastered against the hard length of his body.

“God, Jess, I love you so much I’m about to burst,” Reece growled, grinding his middle against hers. Their mouths fused, greedy to taste the arousing sensations their love and eternal craving for each other never failed to generate.

“But we don’t want this to happen, do we?” Jess rasped when they came up for air. Looking at him through her lashes, she raked her nails along the hot, throbbing flesh stretching the fabric of his jeans.
