Chapter 5

The party was wellunderway when Gypsy and I arrived at a sorority house on University Street. The music thumped my chest as we entered, mingling with the crowd. Grabbing a beer, I sipped from the thin plastic cup, dancing to the freaky tunes blasting from the monster-sized speakers across the room. It didn’t take long for one of the immortals to join me.

“You smell like the wolf,” a familiar voice observed, “and it stinks.” Ryder appeared out of nowhere, frowning at the cup in my hand. “Need liquid courage? Or to fight off the Lycan and fang banger?”

“No,” I laughed, shaking my head at his reference to Damian and Gabriel. “Just to relax.”

“Don’t worry about the hex bag Gabriel found in your room.”

How did he know about that?

“Kind of hard not to,” I admitted. Chin lifting, I stared directly into Ryder’s green eyes. They glowed with an odd hue, not really a color but more like a rainbow of colors shimming together. Almost reflective like a cat’s eye.

“Let’s take a walk,” he suggested, lightly gripping my elbow as he steered us toward the exit.

Gabriel entered the house, glaring at Ryder.

I caught his pissed expression before Ryder whisked me out the door. “You wanna tell me what that was about?”

“Not really.”

“Then tell me why you’re here.”

“Because I wanted to meet you,” he replied, leading us away from the sorority house and out into the yard.

“That’s not really an answer.”

“Isn’t it?” he smirked. “What do you want to know, angel? I’m an open book.”

Uh-huh. “Where did you come from?”

“Ohio. It’s cold as fuck there right now.”

That wasn’t what I meant. “Okay, let me ask that again. What are you doingherein Mystic Hallows? And why do your eyes have an odd sheen to them?”

He held up his hands and laughed. “Woah, you’re a curious little Raven, aren’t you?”

That was the second time one of them referred to me as a raven. Was it the black hair?

“Could you just answer, please?”

“Alright.” He released my elbow and placed his hands behind his head, the muscles in his arms bulging as he did so. His gaze briefly locked on something far away before he turned those freaky eyes on me. “I’m here because something evil and wicked has entered Mystic Hallows.”

“I know that already.” We established this last night.

“Right. Just making sure I didn’t miss answering anything,” he teased. “My eyes might appear strange to you because I’m not human. Thought that part was obvious.”

“Yeah.”

“I’m a ghoul.”

My experience with ghouls was limited.

Many supernatural beings wandered in and out of Mystic Hallows, and I witnessed a lot of weird shit but not many ghouls. “I’m afraid I’m not very knowledgeable about your kind.”
